Full Job Description
Summary:

We are currently seeking a Senior Software Developer to join our rapidly growing Engineering team. This role is for someone who is passionate about building innovative solutions and being exposed to new challenges and technologies while making an impact. This role is only open to candidates based in Calgary, and will require a presence in the Calgary hub office twice a week.

What your team does:

The Product-Led Growth (PLG) team owns how legal professionals discover, try, and buy Clio products from inside the product itself. That means self-serve trials, first-run onboarding, the in-app storefront where customers find other Clio products, and the upgrade and expansion experiences that connect them to the right plan at the right moment, across Clio Manage, Clio Grow, and Clio Work, our leading legal AI software built for research, drafting, and case strategy. It's a small, cross-functional team of engineers working directly alongside a PM and a designer, with an unusual amount of autonomy over what gets built and how it's measured. Work ships behind feature flags, in small increments, and most of it is A/B tested. You'll own the instrumentation and the readout, not just the code, and you'll see the impact on activation and conversion metrics within weeks rather than quarters. The team also works hands-on with AI coding tools as part of its day-to-day development workflow.

A day in the life might look like:
  • Building and iterating on trial, onboarding, and upgrade experiences used by legal professionals worldwide
  • Designing and running experiments end to end: hypothesis, instrumentation, readout, decision. That includes being comfortable killing your own feature when the data says so
  • Building the systems that determine which offer or prompt a customer sees, and when, including entitlement and access logic
  • Working across the full stack, from backend services to customer-facing UI
  • Partnering directly with product, design, growth marketing, and data. You'll often be the person closest to the number the team is trying to move
  • Review and provide feedback on code, both from within your own team or across all of Clio
  • Collaborate with teams across Clio to diagnose, understand, and solve problems, and to build solutions that may span many areas
  • Teach and learn from those around you - providing constructive feedback to those around you, and taking on feedback to help grow

What you may have:
  • Experience in software development, specifically with building web applications at scale using Ruby on Rails
  • The ability to gain fluency in new technologies quickly and work effectively in an ever-evolving environment that includes distributed teams and customers
  • Demonstrated success in mentorship in software development, particularly using an Agile process and with large scale SaaS products
  • A diverse base of knowledge that allows you to help your team solve complex technical problems
  • A history of past projects (including notable successes and lessons learned) and
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to build high-trust relationships with fellow Clions and customers
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in improving your craft by using AI

Serious bonus points if you have:
  • Previous experience on a Growth engineering team or working in a startup environment, especially at an early stage
  • Hands-on experience with A/B testing and experimentation
  • An entrepreneurial streak, whether that's a side business, a shipped side project, or something similar (success not required)

Don't have all of those?

The most important part of this job is that you approach new challenges with curiosity and a drive to apply what you learn to fixing root causes, not just symptoms. Deep curiosity and a desire to learn will help you succeed in this job, combined with a drive to help others by shipping code. We have cross-trained developers coming from Java, Python, C#, and JavaScript backgrounds, and are happy to help you learn Ruby when you get here.

This posting is for an existing vacancy.

This role is a backfill for an existing position.

  • Flexible time off policy, with an encouraged 20 days off per year.
  • $2000 annual counseling benefit
  • RRSP matching and RESP contribution
  • Clioversary recognition program with special acknowledgement at 3, 5, 7, and 10 years

The expected salary range for this role is $144,700 to $195,900 CAD. Initial placement within the range is informed by geographic region, experience, and skillset, with room to progress as impact and tenure grow. Final offer amounts will vary based on candidate profile.
