The Opportunity:Tetra Tech is seeking a Senior Scientist/Project Manager with advanced expertise in developing innovative natural resource planning, surveying, and permitting solutions. The Manager will evaluate client objectives and regulatory frameworks while overseeing projects and programs involving biological, social, and physical sciences, as well as permitting and planning activities. Success will be measured by the ability to cultivate client relationships, develop winning proposals, deliver high-quality technical services, and manage projects that provide lasting value, strengthen client partnerships, and achieve individual and team revenue goals.
The Senior Scientist/Project Manager may provide strategic leadership, business development, and management support to advance Tetra Tech's environmental science department. The department offers a comprehensive range of natural resource services, including baseline data collection, regulatory compliance, environmental planning, modeling, and permitting. The Manager will also serve as a technical expert on projects across Tetra Tech's global operations.
A key responsibility is developing and securing integrated, cross-disciplinary solutions that help clients achieve their goals by leveraging Tetra Tech's diverse team of scientists, engineers, planners, and strategists. This capability is highly valued and can support career growth and advancement. The position is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and requires occasional travel to meet with Tetra Tech team members and clients.
Essential Job Functions:- Provide project leadership across Tetra Tech's natural resources, permitting, and wetlands practices, with emphasis on the candidate's area of expertise, wetlands, and related permitting.
- Inspire and engage junior team members in the work, regardless of location.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews, ensure team performance, and lead complex projects for challenging clients.
- Participate in Tetra Tech industry initiatives and natural resources practice strategy groups.
- Advance existing initiatives and strategic groups while meeting client needs and delivering high-value services.
- Monitor and provide insight on regulatory, financial, industrial, and practice trends in relevant natural resource disciplines to anticipate client needs and identify interdisciplinary opportunities across Tetra Tech.
- Expand services beyond the candidate's technical practice area by providing programmatic support and oversight for interdisciplinary services to their client base.
- Focus on growing Tetra Tech's overall service portfolio and strengthening client relationships to encourage continued and expanded business.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with commercial, industrial, financial, legal, and energy firms; state, federal, and local governments; and private equity and investment groups to generate business opportunities.
Required Qualifications:- M.S. degree in a soil science, wetland science, restoration ecology, biological or a closely related discipline.
- Fifteen years of project management experience in natural resource (biological and physical) baseline and compliance monitoring, permitting, and planning.
- Expertise and/or strong understanding in developing innovative strategies for clients across market segments including renewable energy, energy transmission, telecommunication, and land management.
- Experience working across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary solutions for a variety of market segments and cross selling services outside of the candidate's technical focus area.
- Dynamic, self-starter with successful experience with project leadership and execution with commercial, industrial, and government clients.
- Ability to delegate project tasks to more junior team members to effectively utilize candidate's strengths is essential.
- Demonstrated experience in managing project finances to strong profitability and team workload, mentoring, and technical quality.
- Skilled in oral and written communication with demonstrated ability developing and delivering effective presentations to customers and management.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through virtual meeting platforms.
- A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications:- Certified Professional Soil Scientist.
- Professional Wetland Scientist.
Physical Requirements: - Work is primarily performed in an office environment using standard equipment, with the ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform computer- and office-related tasks for extended periods.
- May occasionally participate in field visits, site assessments, client meetings, inspections, or project-related activities in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain, walk moderate distances, climb stairs, and access project sites safely when conducting field visits.
- Ability to lift and carry materials, equipment, or supplies up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Visual acuity sufficient to review technical documents, maps, plans, and environmental data, both electronically and in hard copy.
- Occasional travel by vehicle, air, or other means may be required to support project and client needs (approx. 25% of travel required).
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:- This position is based out of the local Ann Arbor, MI office with the potential of a hybrid work arrangement, but the candidate must reside within 20 miles of the local office. This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company's discretion.
- Occasional exposure to construction sites, industrial facilities, natural resource areas, and other field conditions requiring use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to health and safety protocols.

Additional Information:- Full-time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.
