Sr Risk Manager

***This is a remote/work from home position. Candidate must be able to work and live within the Continental US based on our company VPN access.

SUMMARY

The Senior Risk Manager provides strategic leadership and accountability for the development, implementation, and oversight of loss prevention strategies and risk mitigation initiatives across assigned Facilities and Service Lines. This role maintains an influential presence within assigned areas and partners closely with Senior Leadership to address risk and safety priorities, including insurance, claims management, loss prevention, adverse events, and operational issues that may result in risk exposures impacting patients, associates, visitors, and the Ministry. The Senior Risk Manager collaborates closely with key departmental stakeholders, including Human Resources, Legal, Quality, Compliance, and Patient Safety, to ensure a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the organization's risk profile and to drive the identification, prioritization, and mitigation of targeted risk exposures. Reporting to the Risk Director, the Senior Risk Manager may be called upon to provide cross-coverage support for the Risk Director or other team members to ensure leadership continuity during absences or temporary reassignments. In addition, the Senior Risk Manager supports System Risk Management and Loss Prevention efforts by serving as a subject matter expert and actively contributing to system-wide initiatives, committees, networks, task forces, and projects, as assigned by Market or System leadership.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Leads timely initial event response by engaging in leadership discussions to assess facts, identify risks, and determine appropriate next steps.
  • Serves as a key point of contact for complex or high-risk event-related concerns impacting patients, visitors, or workforce members with potential safety, financial, or reputational implications.
  • Leads and oversees comprehensive investigations in collaboration with clinical, legal, and operational stakeholders; synthesizes findings, conducts risk assessments, and escalates significant issues to Director and System Directors as appropriate.
  • Provides expert risk guidance through participation in grievance committees, including review and refinement of response communications where liability exposure exists.
  • Partners with Director and System Directors to lead Apology & Disclosure strategy and Just-In-Time training delivery, including development of materials and logistics, while coaching clinicians and leaders on effective communication following adverse or unanticipated outcomes.
  • Identifies and evaluates cases appropriate for Early Liability Review (ELR) and collaborates with leadership and claims management to support resolution strategies and outcomes.
  • Partners closely with claims management to ensure timely reporting and strategic handling of potentially compensable events; collaborates with outside counsel on interviews, fact development, and case preparation.
  • Manages administrative claims related to professional licensure and board investigations in collaboration with providers and legal counsel.
  • Provides senior-level risk guidance during regulatory surveys and investigations (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, Department of Health), supporting organizational responses to regulatory and licensing inquiries, complaints, and audits.
  • Leads analysis of claims, incident data, and post-loss outcomes across assigned facilities/service lines to identify trends, root causes, and emerging risks, and inform broader risk strategy.
  • Drives accountability and continuous improvement by monitoring and evaluating risk mitigation action plans, ensuring effective follow-up and escalation of issues.
  • Partners with operational leadership to design and implement targeted loss prevention and risk reduction strategies aligned with department and ministry priorities.
  • Contributes to development and execution of risk management strategy, translating data insights, claim trends, and regulatory changes into actionable initiatives at the facility and system level.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for complex risk issues, promoting consistency and best practices across assigned areas.
  • Delivers targeted education on risk management, claims, and insurance principles tailored to assigned facilities and service lines.
