Description

Risk Engineer, US Power

Are you ready to sit at the intersection of engineering, insurance, and the energy transition? Join our US Power team and help shape how we understand and underwrite risk across conventional power generation and the fast-growing renewable energy sector — from operating plants to major construction projects.

We're looking for a technically sharp, commercially minded professional to bring deep risk engineering expertise to the table. You'll conduct on-site and desktop assessments, partner closely with Underwriting and Claims, and help turn complex technical exposures into clear, confident decisions. This is a role where your judgment directly shapes outcomes — for our business and for the clients we protect.

What you'll do:

  • Conduct on-site risk engineering surveys and desktop reviews spanning conventional power and renewable energy risks
  • Evaluate operational plants and construction projects, including large and complex exposures
  • Translate technical findings into clear, actionable risk assessments that drive accurate, profitable underwriting decisions
  • Serve as a trusted technical resource for US Underwriters, Claims teams, and insureds
  • Analyze risk quality, pinpoint loss drivers, and recommend practical mitigation strategies
  • Support claims analysis and identify risk improvement opportunities across the portfolio

What you'll bring:

  • Experience in risk engineering, power generation, renewable energy, or a related technical discipline
  • Solid understanding of conventional power and/or renewable energy operations and construction risk
  • The ability to break down complex technical exposures and explain them clearly to business partners
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving instincts
  • A collaborative mindset and genuine enjoyment of working closely with underwriting and claims professionals

Why this role: This is your chance to work in one of the most dynamic corners of the insurance industry — where traditional power meets the energy transition, and where your technical insight has real influence on underwriting strategy. You'll build expertise across a diverse and growing portfolio, work alongside experienced underwriting and claims professionals, and have genuine ownership over the accounts you manage.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess operational conventional and renewable power generation facilities, as well as construction projects
  • Plan, organize, and perform desk-based risk appraisals for assigned lines of business, delivering risk analysis to Underwriters
  • Prepare plant/process/product descriptions and assess design, hazards, mitigation adequacy, management systems, plant protection, and loss estimates
  • Conduct on-site risk engineering surveys for existing and prospective clients, producing internal summaries or detailed marketing survey reports per Liberty Mutual guidelines
  • Own allocated accounts — attending surveys, following up on key recommendations, and keeping risk engineering files current
  • Provide technical input on claims, including reviewing loss adjuster reports and conducting site visits to identify claims mitigation opportunities, lessons learned, sharing insights with fellow Engineers and Underwriters to inform future loss prevention work
  • Maintain strong professional credibility through consistent technical expertise and sound judgment
  • Stay current on process technology, loss prevention, construction practices, and other developments relevant to your lines of business
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to deepen and broaden your expertise
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities for assigned lines of business
  • Travel regularly as part of the role
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a technical discipline, such as Chemical, Process, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • The job holder will be expected to possess at least five years’ experience in relevant process industries and should have a background in at least one of the following areas in a managerial, technical or consultancy role; Operations, Operations Support, Maintenance, Inspection, Loss Prevention, or Process Safety
  • Previous Insurance experience is not a requirement of this role, but beneficial/desired
  • Demonstrated strong communication and listening skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with Underwriters, Risk Engineers, Claims teams, other Liberty Mutual Staff and Clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use required software applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Should be able to create/modify documents and complex spreadsheets
