Mineral Processing - Senior Researcher

(Permanent Position)

Your Role:

Your main role will be to lead the development of research projects related to mineral processing and agglomeration in Hamilton R&D. Establishing and developing mineral processing capabilities within the R&D laboratory. You will be expected to act as a key interface between R&D, operations, and external partners, ensuring effective translation of research outcomes into industrial performance improvements.

Main Requirements:

  • 10+ years' experience within the mining industry (R&D or operations) with strong knowledge in mineral processing and pelletization.
  • University degree in Material Science, Mining, Chemical, or other relevant Engineering. Advanced degree would be preferred i.e. Masters or PhD.
  • Strong experience in comminution and/or concentration processes (gravity and flotation)
  • Proven experience with laboratory and pilot-scale test work programs
  • Ability to operate at both deep technical level and practical operational level
  • Ability to use techniques and tools to compile data, perform statistical analysis and report findings on mining and steelmaking process data. Experience in Excel, Python, and/or SQL is an asset.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of initiating projects and seeing them through to completion., with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and show ability to work as a team member on cross-functional projects.
  • Effective deployment of R&D requires strong oral, presentation and written communication skills and should be able to communicate across a range of groups (operators to academics).
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Although English is the standard language in ArcelorMittal, a second language is a benefit, particularly French.
  • Wear mandatory industrial personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hat, fire-protected clothing, lab-coat, safety glasses, gloves etc. for performing R&D work.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of laboratory mineral processing test programs and pilot-scale campaigns. Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities for mineral processing plants.
  • Drive revamping alternatives for brownfield operations and conduct trade-off studies to support technical and strategic decision-making. Evaluate technical proposals from equipment and service suppliers.
  • Lead end-to-end development of mineral processing test work programs, from concept definition through execution, data analysis, and technical recommendations.
  • Demonstrate a structured and systematic approach to problem-solving, applying solid statistical knowledge for test work design and data interpretation.
  • Provide strong technical expertise across mineral processing, with solid experience in areas such as comminution (crushing and grinding), gravity concentration, and/or flotation, while maintaining a broad understanding of mineral processing flowsheets.
  • Identify and drive optimization opportunities in existing operations, translating R&D insights into tangible plant improvements.
  • Engage effectively with stakeholders across operating sites and corporate functions, particularly with geological exploration teams.
  • Act as a technical reference in interactions with third parties, including engineering consultants, equipment suppliers, and technology providers.
  • Contribute to the development and structuring of mineral processing capabilities within the laboratory, supporting knowledge transfer and capability building as activities expand.

  • Comfortable in a heavy industrial/mine setting
  • Knowledge of mass and energy balance, heat transfer, general engineering principles, etc. as applied to mining process flow
  • Able to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment
  • Knowledge in predictive modelling/machine learning techniques to optimize process inputs and outputs
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Verbal, presentation, and written communication skills for effect deployment of R&D across a range of groups
  • Ability to multi-task with strong time management skills


Work Conditions:

  • Full-time position, based in Hamilton, ON
  • Typical working hours are 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday
  • Office, Plant, Mine, and Lab Environment
  • Travel will be expected for this role (e.g. mine site visits)
  • This position is 100% onsite

The salary range for this position is $103,600 - $129,500. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications and work experience.
