CBC News is looking to hire a senior technology and AI reporter who will help us make sense of this ever important and evolving beat.

We are looking for a smart, energetic reporter who is fully immersed in the news and developments in the technology and AI landscape and has lots of contacts and connections in the industry. Whether it’s a story about how AI is being or how it has changed our lives, you understand the latest trends, where the news is going, and what the impact will be. You’re able to explain this to our audiences on all platforms in an engaging and compelling way. 

As a senior reporter, you are prepared to move fast on breaking news, providing updates as they come and pivoting where required. You are confident going live (and at times, unscripted) on video, radio and on digital live story pages. You have excellent presentation skills and can explain things quickly, simply and accurately on the fly. You work well in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment. 

You are expected to pitch original stories. You have strong writing, research, and interviewing skills. You are a confident storyteller and can file on-demand pieces in text, audio and video. You craft these stories with a mobile audience in mind. You know how to engage a younger, diverse audience, and are ready to deliver. You are hungry to file stories.

This job is 5 days a week, full-time, with an expectation to work overtime and weekends as required. 

This is a permanent full-time position based anywhere in Canada with daily access to a CBC facility. As collaborating with teams across CBC News is a priority, you will be required to be on-site in this role.

Key tasks:

• Pitch stories about technology and AI that engage our target audience. Break news and follow developments.

• Go live when the story demands it – and file into live story pages and live programming. Gather news in the field and go on location whenever possible.

• Cover major or fast-moving events. Work well under pressure.

• Research, interview and gather new information.

• Craft work with a target 30-49 diverse Canadian audience in mind. Drive to develop content that will be relevant to this demographic. Make stories relatable to a general audience and explain the impact these stories have on people’s everyday lives.

• Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives.

• Shape scripts and file stories for all platforms. Prioritize a mobile and streaming audience. 

• Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing, headlines and text.

• Understand the elements needed to produce strong visual and audio stories. 

• Be able to remain calm under pressure. 

• Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage. Prioritize demands.

• Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources. Be a leader in the beat and share expertise and knowledge with colleagues.

• Have a strong understanding of legal journalistic issues and the ethical principles of our Journalistics Standards and Practices. 

• Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business team and other parts of the CBC.

Your profile:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. 

• Minimum 10 years relevant full-time experience. 

• Excellent understanding of the technology and AI and the impacts they have on our audience. 

• Come with sources and contacts in the tech and AI community and beyond.

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity within the tech beat and the diversity of our target audience

• Experience writing, researching, fact-checking and packaging text, audio and video pieces.

• Excellent presentation skills; comfortable reporting live and unscripted.

• Have deep familiarity with social media and have an ability to surface trending stories.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively with a team and across departments.

• Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.

• Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.

• Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed.

• Knowledge of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.

• University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred.
