About the Role

Reporting to the Regional Capital Projects Engineering Manager, the Senior Regional Mechanical Project Engineering Specialist serves as the technical authority and key partner for project managers, site teams, engineering firms, and subject matter experts. The role is responsible for ensuring the quality, consistency, and technical maturity of capital projects, from early project definition through phase-gate readiness. The incumbent helps clarify required deliverables, challenge proposed solutions, validate technical compliance, and support decision-making for complex projects involving multiple sites, disciplines, and stakeholders.

General Responsibilities

  • Act as the senior technical reference for project managers on mechanical, multidisciplinary, and integration-related matters.
  • Work closely with capital project teams, site capital managers, engineering firms, operations, maintenance, reliability, SMEs, and EHS teams.
  • Define and validate project boundaries, design criteria, discipline interfaces, and required deliverables throughout each FEL phase.
  • Participate in project reviews, design reviews, audits, value engineering workshops, and phase-gate decisions.
  • Challenge technical solutions, cost estimates, schedules, execution strategies, and supplier proposals to ensure safe, robust, and business-aligned outcomes.
  • Validate the quality of technical documentation, tenders, specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and execution plans to minimize risks, change orders, and rework during execution.
  • Ensure proposed solutions meet health and safety, environmental, regulatory compliance, maintenance, operational, and standardization requirements.
  • Capture, share, and integrate lessons learned to continuously improve engineering standards, practices, and regional project performance.
  • Develop, review, and revise Alcoa engineering standards.
  • Review and enhance KPI review processes with engineering firms.
  • Travel regularly to plants across the Northeast region to provide onsite support and maintain a strong field presence.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible for membership.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience in engineering, industrial project management, or capital projects.
  • Significant experience working with engineering firms, multidisciplinary projects, and heavy industrial environments.
  • Functional bilingualism (French and English), both spoken and written, is required due to the nature of the position and interactions with English/French-speaking partners, clients, or colleagues.


Required Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of FEL processes, capital project management, and key engineering deliverables.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to influence decisions without direct authority.
  • Ability to structure complex issues, challenge assumptions, and provide clear recommendations.
  • Collaborative leadership, autonomy, rigor, and a strong sense of accountability.
  • Excellent communication skills with technical, operational, and management stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to health, safety, environmental stewardship, compliance, and risk management.
  • Knowledge of aluminum smelting operations, industrial mechanical equipment, and continuous production environments is a significant asset.
  • Experience in machine safety.

Travel Requirements

This position requires regular travel to facilities throughout the Northeast region to maintain a field presence and provide effective support to local teams.
