Our global team is looking for an experienced, success-oriented Senior Rail Facilities Engineer/Architect that will contribute to the success of HDR's freight rail facilities program. In this role, you will be exposed to a wide variety of multi-disciplinary projects that involve yard offices, mechanical shops, maintenance buildings, structural platforms and canopies, fueling facilities, storage facilities, process piping systems, electrical distribution, site lighting, site/civil infrastructure, pavement, mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

As an employee-owner in this Senior Rail Facilities Engineer/Architect role, we'll count on you to:

Technical

  • Lead freight rail facility and infrastructure design projects.
  • Oversee the design development and documentation of sketches, exhibits, technical drawings, calculations, and specifications to confirm technical accuracy and version control.
  • Apply relevant codes, regulations, and standards to confirm compliance and intent within project designs.
  • Lead quality control and assurance processes by following established guidelines.
  • Review project deliverables and provide feedback to team members.
  • Review cost estimates and material takeoffs for accurate project planning and budgeting.
  • Oversee contractor submittals, including shop drawings and RFIs, to verify design compliance
  • Field
  • Oversee field assessments to evaluate existing infrastructure and document conditions.
  • Travel as needed for site visits, team coordination, and inspection activities.
  • Perform on-site construction inspections to confirm work is executed in accordance with design documents.


Other

  • Obtain and maintain required certifications, including eRailSafe and railroad safety training credentials.
  • Assist in proposal writing, providing technical expertise, scope development, and hours/fee estimates.
  • Participate in business development meetings and interviews with clients.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in interactions with team members, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Embrace constructive feedback and mentorship opportunities to strengthen technical and professional skills.
  • Commit to continuous learning and professional development to grow within the role.
  • Mentorship, feedback, and guidance to entry-level and mid-level design staff.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-20 years of experience in design and/or construction inspection, preferably with freight rail, industrial, and/or transit facility projects.
  • Experience with project management principles and basic accounting principles.
  • Proven ability to solve problems in an interactive environment with business and technical staff to maintain a high degree of collaboration across multiple regions and diverse clients.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, strong communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment with various teams.
  • A dedication to on-going professional development, openness to embracing new challenges, and commitment to be an active participant in our employee-owned culture.
  • Master's degree in engineering, Industrial Architecture, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Active membership and participation in an industry association (e.g. AREMA).
  • Ability to manage design tasks.
