Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a leader for our Knoxville, Tennessee office to grow and manage Stantec's delivery services in the Knoxville area and collaborate on projects and teams across the southeast. This role will work closely with the Business Center Leadership Team to promote growth in the Knoxville and surrounding markets and maintain hands-on technical roles for various projects. The right candidate will have extensive experience managing and executing a variety of Water/Civil projects, staff recruitment and development, managing a multi-discipline team, and business development.
As a senior engineer and project manager in Stantec's Water Business Line, your role is to work on and lead projects both small and large, leading and supervising a team to execute the work. You will perform a variety of tasks related to civil engineering in support of dams, flood protection, power, water resources, and water infrastructure projects across the Municipal, State, Industrial, Power Utility, Private and Federal Markets. Your work may include oversight and direction of calculations, modeling, design, planning, reporting, field work, construction, management and coordination of tasks and assignments, and client interaction. Additionally, you serve as the leader for the Knoxville Office to help recruit, onboard, mentor, supervise, and train staff to assist the business line with building a multi-disciplinary team in Knoxville and the Southeast Region.

This role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to expand their engineering knowledge, grow into different sectors, lead business development efforts, and get involved with teams around the country working on interesting and innovative projects that directly influence the communities we live in.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Working with the Business Center Leadership Team to identify top priorities, key pursuits, and goals for the Knoxville office and team; working collaboratively to achieve those goals.
  • Maintaining a strong culture in the Knoxville office, consistent with Stantec's overall mission and objectives and alignment with Southeast Region goals.
  • Contributing to multiple projects simultaneously, whether in managerial, technical, or support roles.
  • Assisting in developing project scope, budgets, and design for various sized projects, supporting marketing and business development professionals in positioning for potential projects, writing technical portions of proposals, participating in client interviews, and supporting negotiations for project contracts.
  • Growing internal and external networks to enhance Stantec's reputation and identifying additional talent to join our team, specifically in the east Tennessee area.
  • Promoting collaboration and teamwork within the Southeast Region offices and across business lines and geographies, connecting the Knoxville office to the broader Stantec network.
  • Serve as technical lead or project manager on a variety of projects including planning studies, concept through final designs, and construction administration for various projects.
  • Mentoring, empowering, coaching, and supervising other engineers, including setting priorities for their scope of work, their budgets and their schedules for completing the work.
  • Maintaining and enhancing our reputation with clients, approval agencies, and industry professionals as an outstanding service provider.
  • Remaining current on regulatory policy and rule changes and may establish working relationships with regulatory officials.
  • Working in a manner to protect the health and safety of Stantec employees, clients, and the public by following company health, safety and security guidelines and policies.
  • Engaging in professional organizations that align with expertise, writing technical papers, and delivering technical presentations for conference and symposia events.
  • Leading or participating in the recruitment and hiring of new staff including identifying candidates, reviewing resumes, and participating in interviews - attracting, growing, and retaining quality staff in the Knoxville area.


Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Demonstrates ability and desire to work with, and contribute to, a larger team. Previous leadership or people management experience, including project-related work, is highly desirable.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Water resources
    • Dams and levees
    • Water/Wastewater infrastructure
    • Geotechnical engineering
    • Structural engineering
    • Site development
  • Effective communicator and able to work on and lead teams.
  • Ability to communicate and build relationships with clients.
  • Understanding of client expectations, budgeting, proposal writing, and producing high quality deliverables.
  • Efficient project management/technical leadership of assigned tasks on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Leads, participates, and collaborates in a project team setting and engages in creative and critical thought.
  • Technical expertise in many relevant areas of design and understanding of various design and construction methods.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of design and construction codes.
  • Strong presentation and interview skills.
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of the time. Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or similar required.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in at least one jurisdiction with the ability to obtain reciprocity in others, as needed.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience, with experience managing design projects and leading a team.
