Position Overview:
As a Senior Polymer Materials Engineer at Mercury Marine, you will provide technical leadership in the selection, testing, and analysis of polymeric materials for both current products and new product development.
Essential Functions:
- Recommend materials for new product applications, including thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, rubbers, composites, and adhesives.
- Lead evaluation and adoption of new polymer materials and processes through data-driven analysis.
- Serve as a subject matter expert supporting Engineering, Procurement, Supplier Quality, Internal Quality, and Manufacturing.
- Develop and maintain internal specifications for polymer materials, processing methods, and test procedures.
- Utilize laboratory equipment (FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, EDS, melt flow, tensile testing, hardness testing, microscopy) to:
- Conduct failure analysis on components from product testing, production issues, and field returns
- Provide guidance on production materials for externally sourced components
- Evaluate material performance in marine environments, including UV, thermal, chemical, and long-term aging effects
- Provide technical support for polymer-related inquiries across Brunswick enterprise.
- Document findings in clear engineering reports complete with conclusions and recommendations for next steps.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials, Polymer, Composites, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in a materials lab or polymer manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency with both destructive and non-destructive testing methods and associated lab equipment.
- Strong knowledge of polymer selection, processing, manufacturing methods, tooling, quality systems, and technical drawing interpretation.
- Ability to analyze complex or conflicting data to determine root cause.
- Experience working cross-functionally to support product development, manufacturing, and sourcing efforts.
The anticipated pay range for this position is $86,500 - $139,300 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus program. At Brunswick, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate's qualifications and the business context.
