Overview

CANDU Energy Inc./AtkinsRéalis Nuclear Inc. is actively seeking a qualified Senior Mechanical Designer to support engineering roles for nuclear projects in major areas, such as, new build in the province of Ontario, international new builds, refurbishment, and continuous plant operation support modifications for nuclear power plants.

Your role

This position requires working on fast paced technically complex projects in the nuclear industries. Typical duties and essential functions will include but not be limited to the preparation, design, modification, coordination, and/or review of the following:
  • Prepare electronic documents in AutoCAD; Sketching, three-dimensional computer modeling, drawings and construction documents.
  • Apply relevant Codes & Standards and regulatory requirements and coordinate with design team to ensure compliance.
  • Interface with Engineering teams, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
  • Coordinate 3D models between disciplines and construction teams to ensure seamless integration and minimize clashes.
  • Revise existing drawings/3D models (relative to the discipline) from fairly detailed verbal or written instructions, and/or marked up drawings.
  • Develop mechanical equipment and piping layout designs, ensuring safe, accessible, and maintainable configurations.
  • Assist in developing designs and technical specifications for systems such as Heating, Air conditioning, Ventilation, boilers, plumbing, chilled water, building controls, along with other related systems.


About you

  • College diploma or equivalent work experience with a minimum of 10 years in mechanical/Piping design and drafting.
  • Extensive experience in equipment arrangement, piping design, and plant layout for industrial facilities.
  • Experience drafting site layouts and construction drawings for industrial sites, buildings and structures is required. Knowledge of new nuclear early site and facility design and drafting is an asset.
  • Experience providing field support through site visits and inspections, ensuring adherence to design intent and quality requirements.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Plant 3D is preferred.
  • ASME Code knowledge considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of the requirements and interfaces of other engineering disciplines, with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary designs, resolve conflicts, and make independent layout decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and independently develop practical, efficient, and compliant layout solutions.
  • Proven ability to take ownership of assigned plant areas and drive design completion from concept through detailed design.
  • Ability to take marked up engineering drawings and incorporates changes into AutoCAD files.
  • Proficient in equipment and piping modeling, ability to interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) for accurate design implementation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with staff in a team environment as well as independently.
  • This role requires consistent on-site presence and may involve supporting a shift work schedule based on operational needs.
