Full Job Description
Quantum is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in the design, validation, and sustaining of our robotic tape library automation systems. This position is ideal for an experienced mechanical engineer who brings deep expertise in material selection, part qualification, and mechanical validation, along with prior experience developing tape automation libraries or similar high-reliability electromechanical systems.

Quantum designs and develops 100% of our tape library systems in-house using a highly collaborative, co-located engineering team in Centennial, Colorado. Our prototype, test, and qualification labs are located alongside our design group, enabling hands-on ownership from concept through production release and sustaining support. This role requires a strong technical contributor who operates with minimal direction, provides sound engineering judgment, and owns specific mechanical design elements within cross-functional development teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of assemblies, mechanisms, and enclosures for robotic tape automation systems.
  • Drive material selection and validation for plastic, sheet metal, machined, and purchased components, ensuring performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability targets are met.
  • Own part qualification and validation activities, including defining test plans, executing mechanical testing, and reviewing results to support product release decisions.
  • Perform and review tolerance stack-up analysis, fit/function validation, and robustness assessments for high-volume production hardware.
  • Use PTC Creo (Pro/ENGINEER) and associated PDM/ PLM tools for detailed 3D modeling, drawings, and configuration control.
  • Contribute to both new product development and sustaining engineering, including design improvements, cost reductions, and field issue resolution.
  • Participate in system-level integration efforts, working closely with electrical, firmware, manufacturing, and quality engineering teams.
  • Support and lead design verification testing, life testing, and environmental qualification (shock, vibration, thermal, etc.).
  • Collaborate directly with suppliers to resolve component quality issues, evaluate alternate materials or processes, and support production continuity.
  • Initiate and manage engineering change orders (ECOs) while maintaining design intent, documentation accuracy, and traceability.
  • Mentor junior engineers through design reviews, technical guidance, and best practices in mechanical design and validation.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to cross-functional teams and leadership.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline (Master's degree a plus).
  • 12+ years of hands-on mechanical design and product development experience in electromechanical systems.
  • Prior experience with robotic tape libraries, tape automation systems, or similar precision automation hardware is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated strength in material selection, part qualification, and mechanical validation for high-reliability products.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, with PTC Creo experience required and regular, recent hands-on usage.
  • Experience designing with molded plastics, sheet metal, machined components, bearings, etc.
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for reliability.
  • Experience with supplier interaction, including technical reviews.
  • Comfortable operating with minimal technical direction while balancing schedule, cost, and rigor.
  • Must be on-site in Centennial, CO five days per week due to the hands-on nature of hardware.
  • Ability to analyze complex mechanical problems and develop practical, data-driven solutions.
  • Ability to lead and participate in technical design reviews, peer reviews, and cross-functional problem-solving efforts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with engineering, manufacturing, and management teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while also executing independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while meeting project schedules.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to suppliers as needed (domestic and/or international).

Quantum provides a diverse portfolio of health plans for medical and prescription, dental, vision, life, disability and supplemental medical insurance options. We also support our team members' efforts to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle through reimbursement and educational programs. Quantum offers a company-matched 401(k) plan to help employees save for retirement in a tax-advantaged way. We also have an Employee Stock Purchase Program for purchasing Quantum stock at a discounted rate.

Anticipated Annual Salary Range: $130,000 - $165,000

The above pay range represents Quantum's good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Pay within or outside of the range will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, relevant experience, knowledge/education, skills/abilities, internal equity, and budgetary considerations.
