Full Job Description

About the Role

You will lead the design and development of mechanical and mechatronic systems for traffic safety and intelligent transportation applications, with a strong focus on vision detection, AI and sensing technologies. You will work closely with software, technology, Operations, manufacturing teams and suppliers to move products from concept through validation, manufacturing readiness and field deployment.

This is a hands-on role with direct involvement in design, prototyping, testing, troubleshooting and implementation. You will provide technical and project leadership, bringing sound business judgment to decisions about performance, cost, quality and timing. Previous people management experience is required, with the potential to take on formal team management as the role evolves while remaining actively involved in engineering delivery.

What You'll Do
  • Develop Products: Design and improve mechanical and mechatronic systems that integrate cameras, vision sensors, radar, embedded hardware, software and controls.
  • Advance Detection Technology: Develop and refine system logic, control algorithms and AI-enabled capabilities for sensing, detection, classification and data interpretation.
  • Lead Engineering Projects: Define scope, requirements, budgets, resources, risks and timelines. Coordinate technical work and communicate progress and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Validate Performance: Lead prototyping, testing, validation and root-cause analysis to improve reliability, safety and performance in field conditions.
  • Support Manufacturing Scale-Up: Collaborate with Operations, manufacturers and suppliers on design for manufacturability, component specifications, assembly challenges and product validation to support production capacity, quality, cost and delivery needs.
  • Support Deployment: Contribute to field testing, installation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement, designing products that are practical to produce, service and scale.
  • Guide Technical Delivery: Mentor engineers, developers and technicians, build alignment across teams and balance customer needs, operational requirements and business priorities.
  • Document and Improve: Maintain drawings, specifications, bills of materials, test plans and engineering change records. Evaluate emerging technologies for practical product improvements.

What You Bring
  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer or Control Systems Engineering, or a related discipline. A master's degree or PhD is an asset. P.Eng. registration or eligibility with APEGA is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressive mechanical or mechatronics engineering experience, including senior technical responsibility and project leadership.
  • Proven experience developing integrated mechanical or mechatronic systems, with hands-on work involving cameras, optical systems, vision sensors, embedded hardware or field-deployed equipment.
  • Strong experience in AI, machine learning, computer vision, image processing, vision detection or AI-enabled sensing. Experience in traffic systems, intelligent transportation, automated enforcement or roadway sensing is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with Operations, manufacturing teams and suppliers on manufacturability, prototyping, production support, quality, validation and manufacturing scale-up, with an understanding of operational workflows and production requirements.
  • Experience managing complex technical projects, including budgets, schedules, risks, resources and stakeholder priorities.
  • Previous people management experience, including setting expectations, coaching, delegation and performance management, alongside a track record of personally delivering engineering work and practical solutions.
  • Proficiency with relevant engineering and development tools, such as Python, C/C++, MATLAB, Simulink, Arduino or LabVIEW, and CAD software such as SolidWorks or CATIA.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation and communication skills, with the business acumen to weigh technical decisions against cost, customer needs, risk and growth.

The Ideal Candidate

You enjoy building and improving products, working through technical challenges and seeing your work perform in the field. You are comfortable making decisions, managing competing priorities and adapting in a fast-paced environment. You build trust across teams, contribute directly to the work and have the experience to help a team grow.

Work Conditions

Full-time, on-site position, 40 hours per week with 8-hour shifts Monday to Friday. Travel may be required for testing, deployment, customer support or supplier visits. Flexibility to work overtime to meet deadlines is required.
