Full Job Description
The Senior Mechanical Engineer role contributes to the development of physical design solutions for advanced optical platforms, enabling high performance networking products. The position focuses on delivering innovative mechanical designs that meet density, thermal, and manufacturability requirements. The work directly supports the advancement of next-generation optical networking technologies. How you will make an impact: • Develop mechanical designs for leading edge optical platforms incorporating advanced technologies with high density and thermal constraints • Create mechanical part and assembly designs, documentation, and manage design databases • Develop products in alignment with defined processes and project timelines in collaboration with cross-functional teams • Build professional relationships across disciplines through effective communication and delivery of quality engineering solutions by considering all requirements • Present technical reviews to ensure designs are aligned with project requirements, architecture, timelines, and risk identification needs • Apply DFMA methods and develop volume manufacturability processes to ease production road maps • Evaluate first samples, build prototype assemblies, create First Piece Evaluation (FPE) reports • Address product sustaining needs for newly released and mature mechanical designs to address customer and/or manufacturing issues, design improvements • Work with electrical hardware teams and operations to support mechanical platform cost reduction activities • Work with customer response teams to assess field issues (as needed) and with supplier for root cause analysis of failed or poor-quality components. The must haves: • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering • Experience: 10+ years of mechanical engineering design experience in telecom, datacom, or electro-optics • Utilization of CAD software, including Creo Parametric • Background in design of metal components including sheet metal, machined, and die cast parts, and plastic injection molded parts • Application of mechanical and hardware development processes and experience managing design databases • Application of interpersonal communication skills in cross-functional teams • Demonstrated focus on product and process improvement • Attention to detail in engineering design and documentation • Demonstrated analytical, creative, and methodical problem-solving approaches • Application of project management practices in engineering development Nice to haves: • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business.
