Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support the commissioning, retro-commissioning, optimization, and lifecycle management of central utility plants and large-scale building mechanical systems. The ideal candidate will possess at least five (5) years of direct experience commissioning chilled water, condenser water, heating hot water, and large HVAC systems, along with strong project management skills and a solid understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and controls integration. This position will be responsible for identifying operational improvements, reducing energy consumption, enhancing system reliability, managing capital improvement projects, and ensuring mechanical systems perform in accordance with design intent and operational requirements.

The successful candidate is a hands-on mechanical engineer who understands both the engineering and operational aspects of central plant performance. They are equally comfortable troubleshooting BAS sequences, leading retro-commissioning efforts, managing capital projects, and communicating recommendations to executives, operators, and contractors. They bring a strong focus on reliability, energy efficiency, and operational excellence while delivering measurable results across large facility portfolios.

Responsibilities

HVAC Commissioning & Optimization

• Lead commissioning and retro-commissioning activities for central utility plants, including chilled water, condenser water, heating hot water, cooling tower, and associated HVAC systems.
• Evaluate plant performance and develop optimization strategies to improve efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and operational resilience.
• Conduct functional performance testing of mechanical systems and document findings, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
• Analyze system trends, equipment performance, and operating sequences to identify improvement opportunities.
• Verify equipment operation aligns with design intent, owner project requirements, and operational objectives.
• Develop and implement continuous commissioning programs to sustain optimized system performance.
• Develop maintenance capital upgrade plans to ensure optimal central plant and HVAC operation to meet building comfort and efficiency needs

Building Automation & Controls

• Review and troubleshoot Building Automation System (BAS) sequences of operation.
• Collaborate with controls contractors, system integrators, and operations personnel to optimize plant and HVAC control strategies.
• Utilize BAS trend data, alarms, and analytics to diagnose operational issues and improve system performance.
• Validate proper implementation of control sequences for chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air-handling systems, and ancillary equipment.
• Participate in controls upgrades, BAS migrations, and analytics platform deployments.

Project Management

• Manage multiple capital and maintenance projects from planning through execution and closeout.
• Develop project scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and technical specifications.
• Coordinate consultants, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
• Monitor project progress and ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable standards.
• Prepare engineering reports, project status updates, and executive-level presentations.

Engineering Support

• Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, and facility management teams.
• Review mechanical designs, drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals.
• Participate in root cause analyses for major equipment failures and operational issues.
• Support asset management programs by evaluating equipment condition, reliability, and replacement planning.
• Assist in energy management and sustainability initiatives.

Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
• Commissioning certifications such as:
  o CCP (Certified Commissioning Professional)
  o CxA (Certified Commissioning Authority)
  o BCxP (Building Commissioning Professional)
• Experience with large hospitality, healthcare, campus, industrial, or data center facilities.
• Familiarity with:
  o Tridium Niagara
  o BACnet
  o Alerton
  o Distech
  o Siemens Desigo
  o Johnson Controls Metasys
  o Schneider EcoStruxure
  o Honeywell EBI
• Knowledge of ASHRAE commissioning and energy efficiency standards.
• Experience with energy modeling, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and continuous commissioning platforms.
