Full Job Description
You will lead a small, senior team extending the software and data platforms that BCI's Investment Operations department runs on, and you will be expected to stay in the codebase and the architecture yourself.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Your clients are the Investment Operations department in full: Derivatives, Collateral, Cash, Trade Management, Settlements, Business Solutions, and Financial Engineering. Your closest partner in serving them is the Financial Engineering branch, a specialist quantitative modeling and development group embedded within Investment Operations. Financial Engineering owns its models, applications, architecture and analytical toolchain, and every member of that team, including its senior leadership, is hands-on in development and deployment.
The mandate of this role is to support and as required extend that codebase and application suite so that it supports all aspects of Investment Operation mandate both now and in the future. Your team supplies the engineering depth to make that possible: platform and pipeline engineering, data engineering, integration, AI-enabled tooling, and production-grade delivery. Given the size of the team, the person in this seat is a builder as much as a leader.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
Reporting to Vice President, Investment Technology within the Technology department, you will lead a team of up to three software engineers. Your closest partner is the Senior Principal, Financial Engineering; much of the team's work is shaped and directed in concert with them, and your credibility rests on being someone they treat as a technical peer. Investment Operations are your clients, and you are Technology's single point of contact for them.
WHAT YOU BRING
• Bachelor's degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)
• 8+ years in software engineering, including leading engineers while remaining an active technical contributor
• A proven history of personally writing and shipping production-grade code and analytical tooling, not solely in an oversight capacity
• Strong hands-on Python (R an asset); solid SQL, non-relational databases (for example MongoDB), and version control (Git / Bitbucket)
• Practical experience with CI/CD and release engineering, containerisation (Docker), and cloud platforms (AWS or equivalent)
• Experience with modern data platforms and with AI / Gen AI tooling; deploying AI agents or LLM-enabled tooling in an operational setting is preferred
HELPFUL / PREFERRED
• Posit Connect, Jupyter Notebooks, MongoDB Atlas, or similar analytical publishing platforms
• Knowledge of the investment management industry or financial services
• Enterprise integration patterns, microservices, or iPaaS platforms (for example MuleSoft)
• Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) or designation (CFA, FRM, CQF, MBA)
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Hands-On Engineering & Delivery
• Writes production-quality code and participates in peer review, contributing directly to analytical platforms, data pipelines, and business-facing applications
• Prototypes emerging technology, including AI agent frameworks and LLM-enabled tooling, and champions clean code, automated testing, and documentation by example
Partnership & Client Relationships
• Works in close partnership with the Financial Engineering team, taking direction on priorities while bringing forward engineering options and enterprise alignment
• Plans jointly with the branch on where its models and applications should be extended next, and keeps a workable line between what the branch owns and what this team owns
• Proactively proposes solutions to business problems, tracks delivery KPIs, and allocates a small team's capacity where it produces the most value
Platform, Architecture & Risk
• Provides infrastructure and platform engineering support, including microservices deployment, data integration pipelines, and API/framework provisioning
• Coordinates infrastructure support and enterprise systems alignment with the wider Technology department
• Drives modernization, rationalization, automation, and self-service to remove friction; shapes vendor decisions and manages the allocated budget
• Maintains operational and data quality frameworks, and identifies, mitigates, and escalates technical and deployment risk with appropriate urgency
Team Leadership
• Sets clear objectives, coaches performance, and manages workload across concurrent projects without compromising quality
• Builds capability through skill-gap analysis, stretch assignments, and individual development plans, developing domain fluency alongside technical skill
• Acts as a cultural role model and senior escalation point: collaborative, inclusive, intellectually honest, and quick to remove barriers
