Full Job Description
Overview

The Senior Manager – Land Accounting provides leadership for the Company's land accounting function, including standardization of accounting practices, process improvements, technical accounting analyses, and development of accounting personnel across Green Brick Partners and its subsidiaries.

Responsibilities

Close, Accounting and Financial Analysis

  • Oversee and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for assigned land development entities and projects.
  • Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting analyses prepared by accounting staff.
  • Prepare complex journal entries, account reconciliations, and accounting analyses for significant or non-routine transactions.
  • Analyze financial results, development spending, and project activity to ensure accounting records accurately reflect operating performance.
  • Review budget-to-actual variances and investigate unusual trends, fluctuations, or transactions.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with U.S. GAAP and Company accounting policies.

 

Financial Reporting, Internal Controls and Compliance

  • Prepare and review monthly financial reporting packages for management and operational leadership.
  • Coordinate the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation for quarterly and annual SEC reporting requirements.
  • Execute and monitor internal controls over financial reporting in compliance with SOX requirements.
  • Coordinate and respond to information requests from internal auditors, external auditors, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and support the implementation and standardization of accounting policies, procedures, and reporting practices across the land function.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls, improve reporting accuracy, and enhance process efficiency.

 

Land Acquisition and Development Operations

  • Manage accounting and reporting for land acquisitions, land dispositions, finished lot purchases, lot takedowns, lot transfers, and community development activities.
  • Review and monitor land development expenditures to ensure costs are properly recorded, capitalized, and allocated in accordance with Company policy and U.S. GAAP.
  • Oversee lot cost allocation methodologies and inventory costing processes, including the allocation of development costs to individual communities and lots.
  • Review land development draws, budget-to-actual analyses, and project spending activity to ensure accurate financial reporting and operational accountability.
  • Coordinate with title companies, land acquisition teams, developers, and division leadership to facilitate land transactions and maintain accurate accounting records.
  • Review land development budgets, forecasts, and project cost analyses prepared by accounting staff.
  • Oversee accounting and reporting for land-related joint ventures, including review of monthly financial packages, capital activity, distributions, and related accounting analyses.
  • Analyze and reconcile land inventory balances, development costs, lot inventory, and related reserves or adjustments.
  • Partner with land acquisition, land development, finance, and operational leadership to provide accounting guidance and financial insights related to land investments and development projects.
  • Lead technical accounting conclusions for complex land transactions, joint venture arrangements, development agreements, and other strategic initiatives.

 

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Staff and Senior Accountants through training, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and support employees in achieving individual and departmental goals.
  • Review work product to promote accuracy, consistency, and compliance with Company policies and accounting standards.
  • Foster collaboration and accountability while promoting Green Brick's HOME values throughout the accounting organization.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, strengthen controls, and support the scalability of accounting operations.
  • Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and retaining high-performing accounting professionals.
  • Assist in establishing departmental priorities, staffing plans and long-term development strategies for the land accounting organization.

 Supervision of Others: Staff and/or Senior Accountants

 

Authority/Budget/Decision Making/Discretion and Independent Judgment Ability: 

  • Exercises independent judgement on accounting treatment for standard and non-recurring entries and transactions
  • Exercises independent judgement in preparation of monthly financial reporting schedules

 

Physical Requirements:  Ability to stand and walk for 4 hours straight or up to a full 8-hour day; sit for extended periods; kneel and bend at the waist; walk up and down stairs; walk on unlevel terrain; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

Qualifications

Education:

Experience:

  • 7-10+ years’ of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting and/or relevant industry experience
  • Experience in the homebuilding, land development, or real estate industry required, including accounting for land acquisitions, development costs, lot inventory, finished lot purchases, land joint ventures, and related operational activities.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP accounting
  • Strong understanding of month-end close and financial statements preparation processes
  • Understanding of internal controls
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong analytical skills with regards to comparative financial statements and historical financial data
  • Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Excel, accounting software and databases, including query and data mining
  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable effective communication with staff and management
