Full Job Description
Biohabitats is seeking a Senior Landscape Architect with a strong background in ecology and experience in nature-based design and/or ecological restoration to join our Hudson River Bioregion team.

The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, analytical, design, project management, and graphic communication skills that can be applied to a variety of projects including planning studies, in-field ecological assessments, preparation of design plans and construction documents, and materials to support community engagement initiatives. The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, landscape architects, and engineers to lead and support ecological restoration, conservation, climate adaptation and resiliency, and environmental justice work for government, private, and non-governmental organizations.

Our Hudson River Bioregion office works closely with our Northeast Highlands and Coastal Bioregion on a range of master planning, green stormwater infrastructure, nature-based coastal resilience, and habitat restoration projects that transform landscapes and enhance ecological function and performance for communities and wildlife from New Jersey up through New England.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Serving as Project Manager or Technical Lead on projects.


  • Leading and supporting a range of planning, design, and design-build projects related to ecological restoration, conservation, climate adaptation and resiliency, and environmental justice.


  • Creating site-specific concept designs.


  • Preparing design drawings, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimates.


  • Conducting natural resources and watershed inventories and field assessments.


  • Providing graphic communication oversight and input on projects and proposals.


  • Leading and participating in community engagement initiatives.


  • Providing construction phase services (e.g., bid support, construction observation).


  • Supporting Hudson River Bioregion business development activities, including maintaining client relationships, lead generation, and proposal writing.


Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Professional experience related to ecological restoration, conservation, and climate adaptation and resiliency. Applied experience leading and supporting design projects from concept through construction drawings and implementation (e.g., grading, soils, planting plans, habitat enhancement features, and non-native invasive species management etc.).


  • Community engagement experience.


  • Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and Microsoft 365.


  • 2+ years of project management experience including oversight of budgets, deliverables, client relationships, and project teams.


  • Ability to lead or support field assessments under a variety of weather and site conditions.


  • Strong graphic, written, and oral communication skills.


  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.


  • Willingness to travel throughout the Hudson River and Northeast region.


  • Love for wild nature and a dedication to restore the earth and inspire ecological stewardship is a must.


Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Familiarity with ecosystems of Hudson River, Long Island Sound, Coastal New Jersey watersheds.


  • Native plant identification and habitat assessments.


  • Familiarity with permitting of restoration projects in NJ, NY, CT, RI, or MA.


  • Experience developing proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.


  • Experience in business development and professional networking in NJ, NY, and/or New England.


  • Experience with construction oversight; familiarity with restoration construction a plus.


Education

Master's degree in landscape architecture with a background in ecology or related discipline.

Years of Relevant Experience

10-15 years of relevant experience as a Landscape Architect with an emphasis on ecological design and at least 2 years of project management experience.

Professional Registration

Registered Professional Landscape Architect preferred

Salary Range

$110,000.00 - $125,000.00

Location

Brooklyn, NY. Biohabitats provides a flexible, hybrid work environment. During the onboarding period, new team members are expected to spend several days each week in our Brooklyn office. They can then transition to at least two office days per week, with flexibility to adjust based on field work and travel.
