Emergo by UL's HFR&D team is an industry leader in providing user research, user interface design, usability testing and other human factors consulting services to its clients. Many of the world's leading medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers rely upon our services to produce safe and satisfying products and get them launched. Our work involves the research, design, and evaluation of the user interfaces of medical devices, pharmaceutical devices, diagnostics and laboratory instruments. Our research and design portfolio include products and systems such as robotic surgery systems, imaging devices, autoinjectors, inhalers, ventilators, mobile medical apps, laboratory instruments and in vitro diagnostic devices. As a member of the team, a Senior Human Factors Specialist will be responsible for:

Responsibilities

  • This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our Concord, MA office.
  • Leading usability testing, field research, individual interviews, and group interviews.
  • Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from the aforementioned research activities aimed to evaluate and ultimately validate user interface designs.
  • Developing and reviewing documentation, including but not limited to usability test protocols and reports, use-related risk analyses, user profiles, and Human Factors Engineering reports.
  • Delivering test results, conclusions, and opportunities for improvement to clients via presentations and written deliverables.
  • Serving as a peer reviewer for other team members' deliverables to ensure that they meet quality standards.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for key clients and performing various internal- and client-facing project management activities, including managing project budgets and schedules.
  • Supporting scoping discussions and proposal development for new potential projects.
  • Mentoring and supporting Human Factors Associates and Specialists.
  • Maintaining current and evolving knowledge of medical industry regulations and standards, including but not limited to the US FDA HFE guidance and IEC62366.
  • Reading and following the UL Solutions Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performing other duties as directed.


Qualifications

  • University Degree (Equivalent to Bachelor's degree) in Human Factors Engineering or a related discipline
  • 4-6 years of experience applying Human Factors Engineering to the development of medical devices, combination products, or related products.
  • Advanced degree in Human Factors Engineering preferred.
  • Hands-on experience leading various HF activities and deliverables for medical devices and/or combination products, including planning, conducting, and developing detailed documentation for formative and HF validation/summative usability tests
  • Experience applying FDA's Human Factors-related guidance documents and IEC62366
  • Experience managing technical projects and communicating with clients
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and productively with team members and clients globally.
  • Ability to communicate and present effectively, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to travel 20% to support research and usability testing, primarily in the US.

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $95,000 - $115,000. USD and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 10% of the base salary.

This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday and personal days (totaling 12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
