Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President, Geohazards, Stantec is looking for a Senior Geotechnical and Geohazards Engineer with the ability to join one of our offices in Calgary, Alberta or Burnaby, BC (would consider other Stantec Office that fits with our business model). This individual would be joining a global team of specialists that reduce the impacts of geohazards, save lives, develop resilient infrastructure, and help protect communities.

The Geotechnical and Geohazards team at Stantec works across business line and technical specialties that regularly include archaeologists, biologists, hydrotechnical, civil and environmental engineers, geomatics practitioners, and GIS experts. We provide expertise in:
  • Geomorphological and terrain mapping; interpretation of air photograph, satellite and LiDAR imagery, building models of landforms, processes, hazards and risks and integrating models into engineering design
  • Geotechnical analysis, design, innovation, and mitigation
  • Landslide runout models (local and regional) and derivative products
  • Probability of failure assessments, quantitative hazard and risk analyses
  • Field investigations of slope and river hazards

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Strategy: Identify and prioritize key clients and growth opportunities in each sector across North America and foster brand building promotional efforts.
  • MBD & Sales: Win major projects across the region. Represent Stantec and the Geotechnical and Geohazards team as subject matter expert to our clients and the public at large; Grow and develop the market related to debris flow assessments and mitigation opportunities
  • Client and Account Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships and portfolios with key clients.
  • Team Development: Mentor junior and intermediate staff and collaborate with experienced colleagues and subject matter experts to provide 'best in class' solutions to client challenges;
  • Technical Delivery: Model natural hazard phenomena including landslides, rock fall, debris avalanches, debris flows, debris floods, and floods using industry leading software;
    • Provide senior technical expertise and oversight with respect to
      • Model use (choice, technical correctness)
      • Mitigation analysis, innovation, and design
      • Landslide and landslide hazard assessments
      • Landslide risk assessments
    • Travel for business as necessary
    • Plan and lead field crews to safely acquire the data necessary to solve client challenges;
    • Write reports and be responsible for their technical accuracy, communicating limitations and assumptions, delivering within a budget and schedule, and ensuring that the quality meets state requirements and Stantec expectations;
    • Keep accurate time records and submit them weekly;


Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials:
  • Minimum Education and Experience: As this is an advanced role requiring a high degree of subject matter expertise. A PhD in a related discipline is preferred, but a Master's degree and demonstrated understanding, training, and experience to meet the requirements above will be considered.
  • Advanced subject matter expertise in debris flows, debris flow assessments, models, and debris flow mitigation. The ideal candidate with have a graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in the field of engineering geology, or geotechnical engineering, or related field and relevant experience.
  • Registered as, or eligible to register as a P.Eng. in Alberta and/or British Columbia. Preference will be given to existing registrants. Ability to register as a PE in the US considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience using geohazards models. Preference will be given to experience using RAAMS, HEC-RAS, FLO2D, DebrisFlow Predictor or similar industry leading software that models geomorphological phenomena; working expertise with GeoStudio, LeapFrog, FLAC, and Plaxis software considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience designing landslide mitigation. A focus on debris flow mitigation design is considered an asset;
  • We have a strong preference for candidates with ArcGIS Pro experience. Other GIS experience is acceptable, but the candidate must be willing to rapidly learn ArcGIS Pro on their own time to meet the job requirements and expectations;
  • General job-related requirements include: o Ability to work with and communicate to a team of Engineers and Geoscientists.
    • Willingness to travel and participate in remote field work and ability to adapt to unpredictable field conditions;
    • Physically fit and able to endure hiking in rugged terrain;
    • Strong communications and writing skills;
    • Work effectively in a team environment;
    • Fluent in English; and
    • A valid driver's license.
