DescriptionThe GPI Albany, NY office is seeking a full-time, team-oriented, self-motivated Environmental Scientist with eight (8) plus years' experience as a consultant and/or scientist in an environmental consulting firm or environmental/governmental agency. The qualified Environmental Scientist will process a wide range of environmental aspects of a variety of projects, perform technical fieldwork, prepare reports, coordinate with stakeholders and resource agencies, and manage key tasks, while serving in a support role for multi-disciplinary projects. The candidate must possess strong writing, verbal, and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities:- Serve as a technical lead, guiding the Environmental group on best practices, decisions, troubleshooting, and QA/QC.
- Maintain effective communication with project managers, clients, and cross-functional teams.
- Ensure effective resource allocation, adequate staffing, and utilization to meet project deadlines.
- Manage environmental components of civil highway, structural, and land development projects, including:
- Evaluate applicable environmental regulations (NYSDEC Article 15 and 24, USACOE Section 10 and 404, NYSDOS Coastal Policies, NYSHPO Cultural Resource Section 106, ESA Section 7, etc.);
- Prepare permit applications to abide by such regulations; provide engineers and clients guidance and interpretation on interdisciplinary environmental protection laws, regulations and permit jurisdictions;
- Utilize computer programs and technologies such as GIS and GPS to review and process projects.
- Review engineered project plan sets and work with project managers and engineers to ensure projects are designed with appropriate environmental elements.
- Perform landscape-level resource analysis and impact assessment at individual project sites that include stream or wetland crossings, conduct or assist with formal wetland and waterway delineations, be familiar with endangered or threatened species issues, and understand habitat and ecology principles and functions. Knowledge of Northeastern US plant identification and biology is useful, as well as possessing an understanding of stream and wetland dynamics, restoration, and mitigation.
- Undertake extensive interface with client representatives, government agency personnel, and the public on civil project development and environmental review and permitting procedures. This may include frequent field visits to project sites with various entities to complete an analysis of environmental and resource impacts and conformance to regulatory standards.
- Interpret and assist in the development of civil highway, bridge, and land development design plan sets, details, and specifications. Technical and persuasive writing of reports, letters, emails, and public presentations.
Qualifications:- BA or BS in Biology, Environmental Science, or closely related natural resource field required.
- Over eight years of experience as a consultant and/or scientist in an environmental consulting firm or environmental/governmental agency preferred.
Requirements- Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration
- Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language
- Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members
- Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.)
- Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working
- Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds
