Examples of Duties Summit County Government is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative Senior Environmental Health Specialist (EHS). A Senior EHS is knowledgeable and experienced in all major Environmental Health programs. They promote community health by performing lead level consultations, inspections and investigations as required by laws, rules, and regulations of the State of Colorado and the Summit County Public Health Department. They document violations, provide education and recommend the initiation of enforcement actions to supervisor. The position will train newer EHS's. The successful candidate will have specific subject matter expertise and a leadership role in the retail food, childcare center, school and radon programs. The Senior EHS assists in the development of policies and procedures and makes recommendations regarding program improvements.
This is an exempt, full-time position. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional hours may be required to support investigations, inspections, training, emergency response, or other operational needs.
Typical Qualifications Excellent organizational, time management, risk assessment, communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to make professional judgments in the field. Self-starter with the ability to work independently, on a team or leading a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING:- A bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences or other related field (30 semester hours in biological sciences)
- Two years experience conducting a variety of environmental health activities for a governmental agency or military
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:- Valid Colorado driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment and ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Candidate must be a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) as issued by the National Environmental Health Association. Alternative equivalent state registrations may be considered in lieu of the NEHA registration but the candidate must obtain the REHS within 6 months of hire
- Standardized retail food inspector certification preferred.
