Job Description

The AbbVie Combination Product Development function provides design and development expertise to enable drug delivery systems for AbbVie pharmaceuticals. The Human Factors Center of Excellence (HF CoE) within CPD manages the drug delivery device user interface design process and executes usability assessments required to support the successful regulatory submission of AbbVie Combination Products. In addition to supporting the development of combination products, the HF CoE provides human factors engineering support for all AbbVie products requiring such support, including oral presentations, medical devices and software as a medical device products.

We are looking for an individual with academic training and professional experience in human factors/usability engineering or a related discipline for a Human Factors role to support our product development efforts.

Overview of Position:

This role is intended to support the HF CoEs need to manage projects to design, test and validate medical products. This individual will work alongside AbbVie HF, Engineering, Medical, Compliance and Regulatory team members to design device user interfaces and HF studies required to ensure ease-of-use, safety, customer acceptance, and regulatory approval.

The individual will perform the following functions:
  • In collaboration with cross-functional development teams, plan and execute the human factors engineering process for product development projects: User-Need Assessments, Task Analysis, UI Design, Usability Testing, Risk Management, Post-Market Surveillance
  • Work with System Engineers to develop user needs requirements and user interface requirements
  • Conduct use-related risk analyses, and recommend and evaluate design mitigations to use-related risks
  • Design user interfaces and associated instructional materials and labeling for combination products, medical devices, oral presentations and software as a medical device.
  • Working with third-party human factors firms to design and conduct usability studies and other usability assessments
  • Prepare and compile thorough documentation (validation protocols, Human Factors Engineering/Usability Engineering Reports) for inclusion in regulatory submissions.
  • Work with other HF CoE team members to advance procedures and best practices that support the work of the CoE.

Qualifications
  • Education in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent.
    • For Senior Engineer I: Bachelors Degree or equivalent education and typically, 10 years of experience, Masters Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.
    • For Senior Engineer II: Bachelors Degree or equivalent education and typically, 12 years of experience, Masters Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience
  • Strong working knowledge of human factors methods and principles.
  • Experience executing comparative analyses is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, understand and master new technical skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
  • Demonstrated scientific writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in medical product development and knowledge or related regulations and standards is preferred.
