Senior Network Engineer with primary responsibilities in operational network infrastructure support. Responsible for configuration, operation and administration of network and server hardware, operating systems and communication links, including routing, switching, wireless network management systems, security support, traffic analysis, firewalls, troubleshooting and related infrastructure. Provides advice, consultation, recommendations and technical expertise on network related projects and tasks including systems design, implementation, troubleshooting and problem solving. Acts as technical resource for Networks & Operations projects or tasks touching multiple functional and technical areas. Works with technical and non-technical staff on a regular basis and is required to communicate in a clear and concise manner. Provides support and advice on network related budgeting and architecture matters in partnership with the Senior Network Engineer Manager.

Job Duties

Network Engineering
-Implement and maintain routers, switches, remote access servers, load balancers, security, firewalls, applications and device servers and Internet and Intranet devices and connections.
- Monitor and maintain network stability, collect and analyze network and memory utilization and install and test software upgrades.
- Design, configure, monitor and optimize local, metropolitan and wide area networks for optimal performance, maximum availability, minimal maintenance and reasonable costs.
- Perform preventative and fault isolation maintenance on the local, metropolitan and wide area networks.
- Design, configure, maintain and manage network security features for local, metropolitan and wide area networks. Configure, monitor and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention and related systems to ensure network and systems integrity.
- Perform customization and system administration for network management, task/project management, service desk, work group integration, documentation, and educational software packages on local and wide area networks.
- Work with other Engineers to integrate voice, data and video applications on the local and wide area networks.
- Coordinate third-party maintenance for network hardware, software and telecommunications services.
- Analyze, recommend, and evaluate new hardware, software, and communications products for network compatibility and applicability.
- Look for ways to improve and promote quality and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.
- Develop, maintain and update a library of technical documentation.
- Perform advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting, including in depth packet analysis.
- Annually complete a minimum of 40 hours training or education on current or emerging technology through trade magazines, manuals, seminars and courses.

Systems Consultation
-Provide consultation and assistance to Enterprise Systems Services staff with systems design, implementations, optimizations, troubleshooting, problem solving and documentation as required.

System Administration
-Administer network infrastructure servers for DNS, DHCP and RADIUS, including troubleshooting and improving these services.
- Administer and develop network infrastructure databases and front-end applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• 7 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Network Engineering, Computer Science or related field, AND 3 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with high-volume, mission-critical applications and databases.
• Proven project management experience.
• Experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting local and wide area networks for enterprise systems.
• Experience with dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
• Experience working hands on with vendors and project management in support of network functionality.
• Works independently on tasks and monitors progress against defined parameters.
• Intermediate to advanced Linux administration skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Experience with networking both on-prem and in public cloud.
• Demonstrated ability and/or experience working collaboratively with students and/or colleagues to foster a supportive and effective learning and work environment.
• OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Functional or technical support experience with client server technology, relational databases and graphic user interfaces desired.
• Experience with perimeter security, virtual private networks, and intrusion protection for enterprise systems desired.
• Experience with Higher Education is highly desired.
• Cisco, SQL, DHCP, DNS, LDAP, NTP, RADIUS, SQL, HTML - experience highly desired.
• Competence with scripting languages (e.g. Perl, BASH) and at least one high-level programming language (e.g. C, Java).
• Ability to review user department needs and design and develop practical systems network applications, in a timely manner, to maximize user benefits.
• Experience building or operating a mature network monitoring platform.
• Experience automating alerts and tasks where feasible and valuable.
• Experience with Infrastructure as a service technologies.
• Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
• Ability to productively conduct group presentations and meetings.
• Ability to develop routine and special reports regarding network utilization and connectivity.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

Salary : The Hiring Department's expected hiring range is $115,000 to $128,000 annually. Individual placement within the hiring range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the full annual salary range for this position is $92,475 - $138,713.

Schedule/Appointment : Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

Working Conditions : Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and field locations where infrastructure is installed and maintained (including climate-controlled data centers with exposure to moderate noise levels). Work involves operation of personal computer equipment up to 8 hours daily. Duties may also involve occasional stooping, crawling and lifting of up to 50-75 lbs. in order to install or check the installation of network devices and cabling. Occasional travel to various worksites may also be required, depending on assignment. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
