Job DescriptionJob Summary:We're a fast-growing insurance brokerage that has scaled quickly through acquisition, bringing 200+ offices under one roof in just a few years. That kind of growth creates real tax complexity: multi-state exposure, partnership and flow-through structures, and a constant flow of new entities to integrate. We're hiring a Head of Tax to build and lead the function that keeps all of it running smoothly and positions us for what's next. This is a chance to own tax strategy end to end, shape how we scale, and be a trusted partner to finance and executive leadership as we keep growing.
Duties & Responsibilities:- Own the company's overall tax strategy and policy across federal, multi-state, and local jurisdictions, partnering with consolidated insurance agencies and corporate finance leadership to ensure tax positions align with business objectives and support ongoing growth.
- Direct the preparation, review, and filing of all tax returns, reconciliations, and projects related to tax and equity, including Schedule K-1 reporting and partnership/flow-through structures, ensuring accuracy and timeliness across a complex multi-entity organization.
- Lead the response to tax notices and audits, ensuring state tax methodologies are updated appropriately and communicated to external tax partners and internal finance leaders, including reassessing outstanding FIN 48 reserve positions and other uncertain tax positions.
- Provide tax leadership on mergers, acquisitions, and integrations, including due diligence, structuring, and post-close integration of acquired agencies into the consolidated tax framework.
- Oversee tax provision and reporting under ASC 740, partnering with accounting and external auditors to ensure accurate financial statement presentation and disclosure.
- Direct tax research across applicable regulations, tax codes, and case law to ensure compliance, while proactively identifying planning opportunities, credits, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Manage relationships with external tax advisors, consultants, and taxing authorities, controlling spend and holding partners accountable to quality and deadlines.
- Build, mentor, and lead the internal tax function, establishing scalable processes, controls, and technology to support a rapidly growing enterprise.
QualificationsQualifications:- College, university, or equivalent degree in accounting or a related field required; CPA, Chartered Accountant, or similar certification strongly preferred. Advanced degree (MST or MBA) is a plus.
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including a mix of public accounting and in-house/corporate tax leadership, with a track record of building or scaling a tax function.
- Deep expertise in partnership taxation and flow-through structures, including Schedule K-1 reporting, tax equity, and multi-tiered entity structures.
- Strong experience reviewing and improving estimated tax payment calculations and processes, and reviewing state and local income and agency franchise tax returns for domestic operations while leading assigned state and local audits.
- Demonstrated experience with ASC 740 tax provision, FIN 48, and financial statement reporting in a consolidated, multi-entity environment.
- Experience supporting M&A activity, including tax due diligence, structuring, and integration, ideally in a private equity backed or high-acquisition setting.
- Industry background in insurance, financial services, healthcare, or tech/SaaS; public tax experience required.
- Proven people leader with strong communication skills and the ability to partner with senior finance and executive stakeholders.
