Job Summary:

We are looking for an Senior Design Engineer that is ready to jump into action with our aftertreatment product lines that span the market segments of machines, electric power, marine, rail, and oil & gas. You will have aftertreatment product line responsibility for components, sub-system, and system integration designs. This position will give you the opportunity to create new and innovative aftertreatment design solutions. Unique to this role, you will have the opportunity to get hands on and participate in product development activities. With your help, our products will continue to significantly reduce harmful diesel and gas engine exhaust emissions.

In this role, you will report to our Engineering Manager and be able to collaborate and be supported by our established diverse global team of aftertreatment design experts and project leads. You will have significant opportunities to network with other professionals inside and outside our organization in career functions like manufacturing, operations, simulation, marketing, purchasing, emission regulators, and other product groups. You will gain exposure and practical knowledge of worldwide emissions regulations.

What you will do:
  • Prepares concept, design, development, and feasibility studies of complex engineering projects.
  • Evaluates, defines, and resolves design and manufacturing problems.
  • Ensures assigned projects meet time, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Communicate technical information to other team members, suppliers, and process partners.
  • Collaborate with and support other engineers, managers, operations, purchasing, suppliers and marketing personnel.
  • Research new materials and competitive products. Organize, coordinate, and execute the building, testing, and analysis of prototypes.
  • Assist supply specialists and buyers with supplier development and supplier performance. Oversee the efforts of drafting and testing specialists.
  • Develop and document functional requirements and translating into detail design documents. Participate in buy-build analysis for product components.


Education and Experience Requirement
  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to develop product concepts.


Skills you will have:
  • Analytical Thinking: Extensive knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems
  • Effective Communications: Extensive knowledge of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Extensive knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Technical Excellence: Extensive knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive experience with tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.
  • Product Design - MFG: Extensive experience with processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.
  • Product Design and Development: Extensive knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.


Top Candidates Will Have:
  • Experience leading NPI, CPI, and Cost Reduction projects with proven results.
  • Working knowledge of NPI, CPI, and APQP processes.
  • Engine or aftertreatment design experience.
  • Understanding of aftertreatment system and design principles.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication (written and verbal) skills to effectively work with global team and supply base.
  • Ability to gain a mastery of complex engineering and manufacturability concepts.
  • Familiarity with Creo, CFD, and FEA and how these tools are used for product development and issue resolution.
  • Understanding of GD&T and related engineering standards.
  • General understanding of the manufacturing processes used for stainless steel sheet-metal fabrications and welding.
  • Master's degree in an accredited Engineering Program.


Additional Information:
  • This position is located in Mossville, IL.
  • Less than 25% travel may be required.

Summary Pay Range:

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
