Job Summary:

The Senior Critical Facility Designer and Engineer ensures the reliability and efficiency of Midco's technical infrastructure to support uninterrupted service delivery. This role drives strategic improvements and performs proactive maintenance to prevent downtime and optimize facility performance. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to implement innovative solutions and uphold safety standards. Their work directly impacts Midco's reputation as a leading internet service provider in the Midwest.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain primary accountability for the uptime, reliability, and resilience of all mission-critical technical facility systems, including electrical power, cooling, life safety, and monitoring systems, ensuring continuous operation of Midco's technical facilities.
  • Lead the planning, design, and engineering of technical facility white space and gray space, including rack layouts, hot/cold aisle containment, cable pathways, branch circuit and power distribution, UPS systems, generators, cooling systems, and phased capacity growth.
  • Serve as the technical authority for diagnosing and resolving complex electrical, mechanical, and HVAC issues, providing hands-on troubleshooting and technical escalation support for critical facilities.
  • Lead requirements gathering with internal stakeholders to define IT and critical load requirements, redundancy models (N, N+1, 2N), growth forecasts, and environmental constraints.
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables, including one-line diagrams, load calculations, grounding and bonding schemes, power distribution architectures, mechanical system layouts, control narratives, sequences of operation, and Basis of Design documentation.
  • Architect, configure, and coordinate BMS and DCIM monitoring systems, including point lists, alarming thresholds, system interlocks, and coordination between electrical and mechanical systems.
  • For internally engineered projects, design and produce complete building, electrical, and mechanical system designs, issuing construction-ready drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, calculation reports, and control documentation.
  • Lead construction project planning and execution, including cost estimation, budgeting, value engineering, capacity expansion planning, temporary system design, and protection of uptime during construction and upgrades.
  • Manage RFPs, vendor selection, bid evaluation, purchase orders, subcontracts, and change orders, while ensuring work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, QA/QC requirements, safety codes, and manufacturer standards.
  • Lead and participate in daily and weekly construction coordination meetings with general contractors, trades, commissioning teams, and operations stakeholders.
  • Lead the development, review, approval, and execution of MOPs (Methods of Procedure), SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), and EOPs (Emergency Operating Procedures) impacting live, mission-critical systems.
  • Collaborate with Technology Engineering, Network Operations, Regional and Field Engineering, Construction, Procurement, and other internal partners to ensure alignment, operational readiness, and long-term facility performance.
  • Contribute to the training, mentorship, and development of engineers and peers, supporting knowledge transfer, technical consistency, and operational excellence across the organization.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical degree or experience.
  • Minimum of seven years' experience in technical facilities or commercial building construction field.
  • Experience in Data Center Infrastructure / Building Management Software systems.
  • Experience in development of MOPs/SOPs for carrying out systems operations.
  • Ability to create, read, and comprehend blueprints and building documentation.
  • High level of understanding all aspects of building construction - specializing in electrical construction.
  • Applicable knowledge of NEC, OSHA, NFPA and other safety codes.

Work Environment:
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
  • Employees may be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week and other than normal business hours, such as holidays, evenings and weekends as business demands.
  • Travel to different site location as necessary.
