Universal Shield Insurance Group (and its member companies, Universal Fire & Casualty Insurance Company (www.ufcic.com) and Shield Indemnity Inc.) has an opening for a Senior Commercial Insurance P&C Underwriter at our Dublin, Ohio, Bridge Park Corporate Office location, or our Scottsdale, AZ location in a hybrid work arrangement.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to join an established insurance company on the ground floor, led by experienced professionals with a proven track record of success. Our Commercial Property & Casualty department is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join our team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Capable of managing a renewal book of approximately $7M-$8M and generating new business of approximately $1.5M annually.
  • Objectively analyze diverse information on new and renewal business to accept, price, modify, or reject business within delegated authority level for both Admitted and Surplus Lines Products.
  • Reviewing market conditions to determine whether new coverage should be offered or existing coverage should be scaled back or discontinued.
  • Effectively apply forms, endorsements, and deductibles to help mitigate risk.
  • Preparing written reports and leading meetings detailing/discussing coverage decisions, including supporting documentation.
  • Develop strong business relationships with key wholesalers and agents and provide underwriting guidance to the producers.
  • Identify account rounding opportunities to increase product footprint with wholesalers and customers.
  • Collaborate with other underwriters, marketing, claims, operations, and management colleagues when necessary to manage and implement effective rate and pricing strategies to produce profitable results, book portfolio growth, and enhance producer relations.
  • Identify opportunities for growth within existing and new business sources. Must have expertise in marketing of insurance products and rating/pricing strategies to achieve profitable growth.
  • Maintain a profitable book of business within assigned levels of authority by using sound underwriting judgment and technical skills.
  • Continue personal industry skills and knowledge development to meet the company's goals of quality and timeliness.
  • Maintain knowledge of current insurance market trends, conditions, competitive intelligence, compliance/regulatory issues, and product and service innovations.
  • Ability to interact collaboratively and collegially with colleagues, agents, and customers in a professional manner.


Job Requirements:

  • At least five years of Commercial P&C underwriting insurance experience is required (experience with Commercial Property, General Liability, Inland Marine, BOP/CPP preferred).
  • Achievement of CPCU, CIC, or other applicable designations with a willingness to complete additional credentials and continuing education.
  • Ability to Communicate effectively with internal and external contacts - strong customer service focus.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks on time.
