Full Job Description
Agility Robotics deploys Digit - a humanoid robot - into customer warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing environments. Every customer deployment needs mechanical design work related to workcell layouts, custom fixtures and jigs and possibly additional safety guarding along with integration of off-the-shelf hardware components like barcode scanners and sensors.

This role will be a hands-on Applications Mechanical Engineer/Designer who can take a customer use case concept and turn it into a physical reality captured in CAD with a detailed BOM and documentation. This person will help deploy the design in our test cells and possibly in a customer facility if needed. This is a "do" role. The person will design cell layouts, integrate an off-the-shelf scanner, and help the team troubleshoot fixtures as needed. The range matters more than depth in any single specialty.

About the Work
  • Design customer workcell layouts - robot placement, material flow, operator access, safety zones, and integration with existing customer infrastructure.
  • Design and detail custom fixtures, carts, jigs, staging equipment, and material handling interfaces specific to each customer deployment.
  • Test and integrate off-the-shelf hardware components that have been vetted by the product design engineering team - barcode scanners, 2D code readers, sensors, light curtains, mounting hardware - into deployment configurations.
  • Produce production-quality CAD models, detailed drawings, and BOMs suitable for fabrication, procurement, and field assembly.
  • Assist with customer site surveys to capture physical constraints: floor conditions, ceiling heights, dock configurations, utility access, material flow paths, and existing equipment interfaces.
  • Support cell setup and commissioning on-site - hands-on troubleshooting of mechanical fit, fixture alignment, and hardware integration issues.
  • Adopt and adapt end-of-arm tooling and gripper interfaces for customer-specific manipulation requirements - totes, cases, cartons, and structured items.
  • Collaborate with other team members on deployment configurations - translating mechanical design into robot programming parameters.
  • Build a library of reusable designs - standard cell layouts, common fixture patterns, proven hardware integration approaches - that accelerate future deployments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You
  • 5+ years in mechanical design, applications engineering, or a designer/drafter role with increasing responsibility demonstrated by a portfolio of deployed designs.
  • Proficiency producing detailed drawings and BOMs in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent).
  • Practical experience integrating off-the-shelf hardware components into mechanical assemblies - scanners, sensors, actuators, mounting systems..
  • Familiarity with standard fabrication methods: sheet metal, machining, weldments, 3D printing and the cost and lead time tradeoffs.
  • Hands-on capability to pick up tools, help assemble a fixture, troubleshoot a fit issue, and work alongside field technicians as/if needed.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity: incomplete data, evolving requirements, concurrent crises across multiple customer programs.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time for customer site surveys, deployment support, and commissioning.

Bonus Points
  • Experience running simulation of warehouse automation or material handling equipment.
  • Background in applications engineering at a robotics or automation company - designing solutions for customer environments - ideally environments where robots work alongside people.
  • Experience with gripper design, end-of-arm tooling, or manipulation system interfaces.
  • Familiarity with industrial integration hardware - barcode/2D scanners, safety-rated devices, industrial networking components.
  • A jack-of-all-trades mindset - you're the person who figures out how to make things work with what's available, not the person who waits for perfect conditions.
  • The aptitude and willingness to learn safety standards relevant to robotic workcells

Location
  • This is a hybrid position based out of our Salem, OR or Pittsburgh, PA offices with travel to customer sites up to 20% (site surveys, deployments) | Reports to: Lead, Solution Architecture
