Full Job Description
The Mechanical and Reliability Department provides innovative solutions for electronic prototypes designed for advanced sensing, communication, and navigation systems. Areas of expertise include ground, airborne and shipboard systems. Engineers from the group are critical to all aspects of prototype or system development beginning with conceptual design, continuing through detail design, system integration and test, fabrication, and environmental testing. We provide technical guidance through rigorous analytical, physical, and computational methods with data driven products to enhance decision making and risk management.

Roles & Responsibilities:

MITRE's Mechanical and Reliability Department is seeking a Senior Aeromechanical Engineer to impact a broad work program encompassing UAS, full-scale aircraft, spacecraft, as well as unmanned underwater vehicles. Core job responsibilities include design, analysis, and evaluation of airborne systems and payloads. Opportunities also exist to operate and test UAS solutions, pursue internal research projects, and contribute to defense-oriented systems engineering projects.

The successful candidate will:
  • Work with cross-functional technical teams comprised of both in-house and sponsor personnel in the development and evaluation of aerospace and mechanical systems.
  • Support innovative design and employment of small and autonomous vehicles.
  • Perform structural, aero/fluid dynamics, vibration and thermal analyses at the component, individual item, and system level.
  • Pursue internal research and development in technologies relevant to sponsor interests in the candidate's field of study.
  • Be responsible for deliverables or parts of deliverables to sponsors.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering with 5 years of related experience
  • Experience conducting engineering analyses in the areas of structures, aero/fluid dynamics, vibration and thermodynamics, including the application of Finite Element Analysis and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics techniques
  • Familiarity with fixed-wing and rotary-wing configurations for aerial platforms, flight modes, and powerplants (prop, turbine, electric, etc.)
  • Knowledge of control theory and applications to vehicles
  • Ability to scope and perform aeromechanical engineering tasks autonomously
  • This requisition requires the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Clearance
  • Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements for a clearance, U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site


Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.S. and/or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment and demonstrated effectiveness of written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD tools
  • Experience with ANSYS (e.g. Workbench, APDL, Mechanical, LS-Dyna, CFX, Fluent, Icepak) or similar
  • Experience with design and integration of systems for airborne platforms.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certification and drone piloting experience
  • Demonstrated ability to lead independent research tasks. Experience proposing and conducting technical research projects.

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$121,200 - $151,500 - $181,800 Annual
