  • Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Identify accounting process improvement opportunities and enhance controls.

About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Senior Accountant to join our San Marcos Accounting & Finance team. In this role, you'll play a key part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, supporting monthly close activities, managing payroll and benefits accounting, and maintaining compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.

What You'll Do
Financial Close & General Accounting
  • Partner with the Accounting team to complete monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities accurately and on schedule.
  • Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries.
  • Perform account reconciliations and investigate variances or discrepancies to ensure financial accuracy.
  • Prepare supporting schedules, analyses, and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Execute assigned Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls and support a strong internal control environment.


Payroll & Benefits Accounting
  • Manage accounting activities for weekly and biweekly U.S. payroll cycles, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and SOX control requirements.
  • Support accounting and reconciliation activities related to employee benefit plans, including medical, 401(k), FSA, and other benefit programs.
  • Ensure payroll and benefits-related transactions are accounted for accurately and documented in accordance with company policies.

Tax & Compliance Support
  • Prepare, file, and remit multi-state sales and use tax returns while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Support Avalara tax compliance activities, including exemption certificate management, reporting, system administration, and issue resolution.
  • Research and resolve tax, reconciliation, and accounting questions in partnership with internal stakeholders.
Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen controls, and increase efficiency.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to resolve accounting issues and support business initiatives.
  • Assist with business continuity planning, process documentation, and special projects as needed.

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and/or finance experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on general ledger accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing and filing multi-state sales and use tax returns, including Texas and Louisiana.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred
  • Experience with Avalara tax compliance software.
  • Experience with ERP systems, including Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 and/or Dynamics 365.
  • Experience with OneStream or similar reconciliation and close management tools.
  • Experience researching and applying accounting regulations and guidance.
  • Demonstrated success identifying and implementing process improvements.
