The Job

The Senior Accountant - Pharmacy is responsible for managing financial transactions, reconciliations, and regulatory compliance activities related to the Medicare Part D prescription drug program (pharmacy accounting). The role collaborates closely with internal departments, external vendors, auditors, and regulatory stakeholders to provide accurate financial information, support operational decision-making, and drive process improvements. In addition, the Accountant Sr - Pharmacy assists with financial reporting, and variance analysis to support the organization's financial objectives and strategic initiatives.

You Will
  • Responsible for maintaining accounting records and reconciliations with proper supporting documentation in accordance with company's policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"). This includes preparing and recording general ledger journal entries in accordance with the company's chart of accounts, and ensuring the assigned accounts are reviewed, reconciled, and submitted for manager's review and sign-off on a timely basis.
  • Reconcile and track pharmacy claims data against Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) invoices to eliminate billing variances.
  • Support month-end close activities for the Medicare Part D (pharmacy) business unit, including journal entries for pharmacy claims, manufacturer rebates, Direct and Indirect Remuneration (DIR) fees, manufacturer discount program, plan-to-plan payments and Part D settlement estimates with CMS.
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly Medicare Part D (pharmacy) related account reconciliations, review account activities and diligently research and resolve discrepancies; ensure reconciliations are sufficiently documented and follow-up items are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Reconcile Medicare Part D (pharmacy) risk-sharing arrangements, which include prescription drug event records, direct subsidies and risk-sharing corridors, by analyzing monthly Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reports against plan internal financial records.
  • Prepare and submit required Medicare Part D (pharmacy) reports to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on time, with correct format and data elements. Ensuring strict compliance with CMS financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with supporting schedules for the quarterly and annual regulatory financial filings with regulatory agencies.
  • Assist with the interim and year-end external audits and regulatory financial condition examinations as needed, consisting of schedules preparation, organization, and review of supporting documentation for audits and examinations.
  • Stay current with Medicare Part D (pharmacy) program changes and update accounting systems and processes to reflect new rules.
  • Assist with the review of existing and the development of new accounting policies and procedures, which includes identifying control and process inefficiencies to propose enhancements to the current process or striving for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with Pharmacy, Actuary, IT, Data & Analytics, and Operations departments to resolve issues, validate system changes, and improve end-to-end financial workflows.
  • Participate in special projects and ad hoc analysis, as needed, including automation and efforts to streamline and improve accounting processes.

Your Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • 4+ years in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 2+ years in Medicare Part D, PBM, or managed care accounting.
  • CPA designation is highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Financials or other similar accounting ERP systems
  • Ability to analyze large, complex financial datasets and identify variances or discrepancies.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial and operational data.
  • Proficiency in reconciliation methods, variance investigation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Solid understanding of financial statements, general ledger structure and accounting ERP systems.
  • Working knowledge of Medicare Part D rules, reporting requirements, and CMS payment methodologies
  • Ability to write and interpret SQL and Access queries for data extraction and transformation.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, formulas, and power queries, as well as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently as well as with different departments within the organization.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt with changes in tasks and timelines.
  • Experience working in a fast paced and heavy deadline-driven environment.
