Position Type: Full-time

Pay: $100,000 - $110,000 per year, dependent on experience and education

Job Overview

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's accounting and financial operations. Reporting to the Controller, this position is responsible for a broad range of accounting functions including general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, month-end and year-end close, fixed assets, cash management, leases, financial reporting, audit support, and compliance activities.

This is a highly hands-on accounting position requiring an experienced professional who can work independently, exercise sound judgment, identify and resolve accounting issues, and maintain accurate financial records in a dynamic and evolving environment. The Senior Accountant will interact with staff across the organization, support continuous improvement initiatives, and help ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, internal controls, and organizational policies.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong foundation in accounting operations, financial reporting, and account analysis, along with experience working in nonprofit, governmental, public-sector, or other mission-driven organizations. The successful candidate will be comfortable working across multiple financial systems, managing competing priorities, and taking ownership of recurring accounting processes with minimal supervision.

Job Duties
  • Prepare monthly and annual close journal entries, schedules, and reconciliations.
  • Assist in running, dispersing, and troubleshooting monthly and annual financial reports and dashboards.
  • Record and reconcile Fixed Asset activity, post monthly depreciation, and track CIP projects.
  • Assist with required annual 1099 forms and reporting.
  • Monitor account balances, pull down statements, initiate transfers, and manage fraud warnings for accounts held by the organization.
  • Record all cash activity and cash transfers, outside of payables, for accounts held by the organization.
  • Prepare and manage prepaid schedules and record monthly expenses.
  • Prepare and manage inventory schedules for laptops, REC, and Spare Parts as needed.
  • Responsible for managing GASB 87 amortization schedules and entries.
  • Review journal entries, AP/AR, and cash receipts for coding as needed.
  • Identify and implement department process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Assist in maintaining accounting system and accounting control standard operating procedures.
  • Support budgeting and reforecast processes by compiling information necessary for accurate analysis and projections.
  • Assist with the preparation of schedules and related materials to assist with the Organization's independent annual audit.
  • Support Finance Department on special ad hoc projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Position Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.

Experience:
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • At least five years of experience in nonprofit, governmental, quasi-public, higher education, grant-funded, or other public-sector accounting environments preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience performing month-end and year-end close activities, account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and financial statement support.
  • Experience with cash management, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, lease accounting, and other balance sheet accounting functions.
  • Experience supporting annual financial audits and preparing audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Experience working with multiple accounting and financial systems, including implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, or process improvement activities.
  • Experience working with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidance or nonprofit/public-sector accounting preferred.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and Sales Force systems is a plus.
