This role is categorized as hybrid. The selected candidate will be expected to work on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week, or as otherwise determined by the hiring leader.

  • This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

About the Role:

This position is a key role within the Seat Complete Team, it offers an exciting opportunity to coach/mentor a talented group of seat complete engineers.  In addition to coaching and mentoring the team through challenging technical issues, the candidate will help develop future organizational vision and develop / implement tools.  The candidate should be comfortable with ambiguity and be able to provide direction with incomplete information. A deep knowledge of seat development, integration & validation is required.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design, development and integration of highly complex and large scope program with multiple rows of seats with varying scope.
  • Coordinate integration and tradeoff decisions between seat systems to optimize the overall seat enterprise cost while ensuring program requirements are achieved.
  • Provide technical leadership for overall seat performance and associated tradeoffs for comfort, crashworthiness, SSTS performance, cost, mass, etc.
  • Collaborate with supplier engineers, internal technical resources, vehicle program teams, purchasing, design studio on design solutions while ensuring alignment to program and SMT objectives.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the program seat system, seat components and integration DFMEAs.
  • Coordinate, track, manage and optimize enterprise piece and tooling costs for a complex large scope seat development activity.
  • Lead focused problem solving efforts on significant cost/quality/warranty issues on seat programs.
  • Leverage program specific learnings to expand the overall GM seat system knowledge base by demonstrating outstanding problem solving skills and knowledge management
  • Demonstrate exemplary commitment to customer focused product development
  • Utilize DFSS methodologies to insure robust design development and trade off management. 

Your Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science - Engineering
  • Extensive experience in seat system development with demonstrated levels of outstanding performance.
  • Demonstrated sub system expertise in structures, foam, trim covers, head restraints, lumbar systems, heat and heat/vent/cool systems, occupant detection systems, airbag deployment technologies, CLAs, haptic systems, etc.
  • Detailed knowledge of seat performance requirements including global regulatory requirements and design best practices.
  • Demonstrated early product development to launch expertise and capability
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and lead internal and external resources
  • Thorough understanding of seat system requirements and trade offs
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills – able to build effective coalitions
  • Ability to break down complex issues into understandable pieces
  • Ability to explain technical issues in simple terms
  • Demonstrated ability to “deal with ambiguity” while driving timely decision making toward issue resolution
  • Demonstrated people leader skills to motivate and empower employees to enable optimized levels of performance and execution.
  • Ability to manage a multitude of assignments, program deliverables and launches strategic with high levels of composure and effective implementation.
  • Strong design and manufacturing background to coach and guide engineers in developing robust design solution from a product manufacturing/assembly standpoint.
  • Experience in developing Design Best Practices / Lesson Learned to support 100% virtual validation
  • Able to coach engineers in using our engineering tools (product design and Design for Manufacturing/Assembly tools) or able to identify new tools to support 100% virtual validation
  • Leverage Benchmarking / voice of the customer to define best in class execution for our products
  • Familiar with GD&T, DFMEAs, PFMEAs, KCDS
