The School of Oceanography has an outstanding opportunity for an Impact Manager.

About this Opportunity

The Seafloor Sampling Facility (SEASAM) accommodates a wide range of sample types, from multicore and grab samples to specialized collection needs, while also carrying the critical responsibility of conducting large-diameter piston coring and deep-rock dredging aboard the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, all in support of community service and the development and retention of a collaborative oceanographic workforce for U.S. science.

Reporting to the Director of SEASAM. the SEASAM Impact Manager serves as strategic leadership ensuring the accessibility, responsiveness and enduring positive impact of the Seafloor Sampling (SEASAM) Facility. Acting as a liaison between SEASAM and the US oceanographic research and technical support communities, the Impact Manager bears central responsibility for the discoverability of the SEASAM Facility and its resources. The Impact Manager brings strong experience in geoscience education and engagement to design of facility websites, outreach materials, and scientific and technical education opportunities. The Impact Manager also supports principal investigators utilizing the SEASAM in the development of broader impacts effectively leveraging their field programs. This role serves a crucial function in ensuring the responsiveness of the facility to national needs of the marine geoscience research community.

While the role has no formal staff supervisory responsibilities, the Impact Manager provides critical training and guidance to principal investigators, shipboard science parties and early-career marine technicians.

Key Responsibilities

Workforce Development 40%: Coordinate with Operations Manager, Repository Coordinator, Data Coordinator and Expedition Leaders on development of training materials relevant to data management, track and sensor integration, and deployment of physical sampling devices for use by scientific and technical support communities. Work with principal investigators and vessel operators to identify training opportunities for early career researchers and marine technicians. Coordinate with other workforce development and educational teams (e.g., the UW Ocean Technology Program, UNOLS STEMSeas and MATE programs, Clatsop Community College Marine Technician program, etc.) to enable workforce training opportunities at shore and at sea. In collaboration with Director and Operations and Project managers, lead development and implementation of PI training workshops targeted at improving awareness of and utilization of facility and UNOLS resources, with particular attention to increasing participation by early career individuals and faculty from diverse institutions.

Cruise Planning 20%: Participate in meetings with PI's funded or proposing to use the SEASAM Facility to assist in development and effective integration of educational and outreach activities in their cruise plans. Liaise with scientific and technical support communities to identify infrastructure needs, and communicate with Director and Operations Manager on development of required infrastructure proposals.

Community Engagement 20%: Oversee development and maintenance of a central website for the SEASAM Facility, ensuring regular updates with educational materials and opportunities and connected to the UNOLS Marine Facilities Planner as appropriate. Identify needs for training and educational materials within the scientific and technical support communities. Develop outreach materials, and travel to onloads and offloads as well as national meetings to lead outreach activities.

Data Management 20%: Track statistics on how the SEASAM Facility and outreach materials are being utilized. Collaborate with Data Coordinator on assimilation of relevant facility sampling statistics and development of graphics for reports and presentations. In coordination with Operations Manager and Expedition Leader, maintain updated inventory of facility equipment on the MFP and ensure relevant links to the facility website are functional.

  • 4-5 Years of experience in outreach and education, including development of educational materials and activities


Additional Qualifications
  • Shipboard experience related to marine geoscience, including seafloor sampling, geophysical data collection and/or ocean drilling
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to act as a liaison between students, scientists, vessel operators, and marine technicians
  • Experience with website development and management


Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in Earth or Environmental science or similar
  • Familiarity with the UNOLS system, its major facilities and related education and outreach entities (e.g. MATE Program, STEMSeas, RVTEC, etc)
  • Experience with design and implementation of professional development programs in oceanography and/or geoscience
  • Experience with grant and proposal writing and project management, including with the National Science Foundation
  • Experience with development and leadership of professional development workshops in marine geoscience


Working Conditions

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed up to two weeks per year
  • This is hybrid eligible.

Pay Range Minimum:
$78,000.00 annual

$96,000.00 annual
