Full Job Description
Scientist position in Dr. Steven M. Varga's Laboratory to study the immune response to infection.s independently and presents results.

Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death in children. The goal of the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is to advance cures for catastrophic childhood diseases. The Department is focused on a comprehensive approach that includes basic science research, translational trials and bedside care.

A Scientist position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Steven M. Varga , Member in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The Varga laboratory studies the role of the innate and adaptive immune responses to respiratory viruses and T cell exhaustion during chronic infections and cancer. Ongoing studies leverage a wide array of model systems and techniques including novel mouse models of infection and cancer, patient-derived samples, in vitro co-culture systems, molecular biology, cellular immunology, large data set analysis, and advanced flow cytometry approaches. The Varga lab is a very collaborative and interactive environment focused on the scientific and career development of trainees.

We are looking for an exceptional Scientist to help us lead studies aimed at understanding the immune response to both viral infections and cancer. The individual is expected to lead projects that has both fundamental and translational components. A PhD or equivalent, and extensive postdoctoral research experience are required. Extensive experience with either murine models of infection or cancer and spectral flow cytometry techniques to assess the immune response is required. Applicants should have a strong publication record, exceptional communication and organizational skills, willingness to work in a team atmosphere, willingness to train juniors scientists, and should have excellent multitasking abilities.

Minimum Education and/or Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required.

Minimum Experience:
  • Eight (8) years of relevant work experience is required
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience is required with a Master's degree
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience is required with a PhD

Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $86,320 - $154,960 per year for the role of Scientist- Steve Varga's Lab.
