Nature of Work
This is specialized technical and supervisory work in the City's Sanitation Division. The employee is responsible for supporting the Assistant Director and Director in directing and supervising operations such as scheduling and supervising technical labor, administrative and clerical staff to ensure the enhanced scope of work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Oversees planning, training, directing and evaluating the work of subordinates assigned to the areas identified.
  • Assists in developing and is responsible for the execution of the Division's operations schedule.
  • Assures good customer relations with the public through delivery of service, resolution of complaints, and prompt handling of special requests.
  • Coordinates assignments with other departments to correct issues that are identified throughout the City.
  • Conducts field inspections and reviews reports of activities to determine present effectiveness and efficiency of operation using best management practices to develop more effective and efficient procedures and programs.
  • Assists in administering the provisions of Federal, State and local laws, rules, procedures, guidelines and applicable collective bargaining agreements in matters of performance management, coaching, development and disciplinary action.
  • Assists in planning and recommending the purchase of new equipment; insures adherence to the preventive maintenance and safety programs and keeps informed of the latest developments in waste collection technology.
  • Investigates work related accidents and submits injury reports, confers with the City's Safety Officer to promote a safe working environment.
  • Assists in Division's budget preparations and monitoring process.
  • Attends meetings with community action, business groups and special events coordinators.
  • Confers with governmental agency representatives and contractors on related matters.
  • Assists in the preparation of verbal and written reports on departmental operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Five (5) years experience in general verifiable, progressively responsible municipal sanitation and/or maintenance operation, including three (3) years experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Strong customer service background.
  • Proven track record of progressive supervisory positions with the ability to be flexible and innovative.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processors, calculator, copier and fax machine.
  • No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying bending, kneeling, some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, pushing and pulling.
