About the Position

Our client is seeking a Safety Specialist to support field operations and strengthen safety performance across active heavy civil construction projects. Working in partnership with the Safety Director and project leadership, this individual will help ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, and client-specific safety standards.

This role is ideal for a safety professional who enjoys spending time in the field, coaching project teams, identifying opportunities for improvement, and helping create a proactive safety culture where every employee returns home safely each day.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Partner with project teams to promote safe work practices across active construction sites
  • Assist in maintaining the company's participation in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP)
  • Coordinate and administer the organization's drug-free workplace program, including random testing requirements
  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in employee safety orientation, training sessions, and ongoing educational programs
  • Attend project kickoff and preconstruction meetings to identify project-specific hazards and develop effective safety plans
  • Conduct routine field inspections, safety observations, and compliance audits while documenting findings and recommendations
  • Monitor adherence to OSHA, DOT, company, and client safety requirements
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, identify root causes, and assist with corrective action implementation
  • Encourage open communication and proactive hazard reporting throughout the organization
  • Assist with additional safety initiatives and special projects as needed

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of three years of construction safety experience, preferably within heavy civil construction
  • Experience supporting roadway, highway, underground utility, earthwork, excavation, or site development projects is highly preferred
  • Current CHST or CSP certification
  • OSHA 500 and OSHA 510 certifications required
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, and construction safety best practices
  • Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with field personnel and management
