Overview

SPA has an immediate need for a Safety Engineer - Long-Range Missile Systems.

Responsibilities

This position will serve as the System Safety and Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) / Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board (NNSB) Lead, providing matrixed support across multiple new missile programs. The SETA contractor will work closely with program managers, systems engineers, and external safety boards to ensure that rigorous system safety engineering principles are applied throughout the rapid prototyping and development lifecycle. This role emphasizes hazard identification, risk mitigation, and strict adherence to DoW explosives and weapons safety standards to ensure the safe testing, fielding, and employment of advanced missile systems.

  • Leads matrixed system safety engineering efforts and coordinates WSESRB/NNSB review processes across multiple long-range missile development programs.
  • Develop, review, and oversee System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), hazard analyses, and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR) in accordance with MIL-STD-882E.
  • Serve as the primary programmatic liaison to independent safety review boards (WSESRB, NNSB, etc.), ensuring all certification requirements and documentation are prepared and submitted effectively.
  • Identify, track, and develop mitigation strategies for safety risks associated with energetics, propulsion systems, software safety, and complex weapon integration.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and validate complex DoD systems, advanced weapon systems, and C4ISR equipment.
  • Participate in project reviews, assess contract deliverables, and coordinate with technical review boards on decisions with broad program impact.
  • Review Vendor Integrated Master Schedules (IMS) to ensure product plans and safety certification milestones will reach delivery times according to the overall project schedule.
  • Work with the Program Management team and chief engineer to understand priorities and drive project execution in alignment with those priorities.
  • Develop presentations, recommendations, and written communications to explain system safety postures, hazard analyses, and mitigation strategies to program management and all stakeholders.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Active TS/SCI security clearance at time of application
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Systems Safety, or a related technical discipline
  • 15+ years supporting DoW operations and/or program
  • Able to support routine local travel, including occasional CONUS/OCONUS travel
  • Able to work full-time in a Chantilly VA office within SCIF/SAPF spaces
