THE POSITIONThe Cosumnes Fire Department is seeking qualified persons for the rotational position as Special Operations Captain. This rotational career development position will report directly to the Assistant Fire Chief of Training. The Special Operations Captain will be assigned various assignments/projects/tasks. This Captain is responsible for managing the training of department personnel in all the rescue disciplines, budgeting, maintaining and inventorying rescue equipment, and supporting the Training Division and the Department's Training program.
The person assigned to this day assignment will receive a 10%-day shift incentive added to their base salary and will accrue and use leave benefits at the day rate as outlined in the current contractual agreement between the Cosumnes Community Services District and the Cosumnes Chapter of Local 522. This position is a 40-hour per week assignment. Days and hours to be determined based on district needs. Work hours may be flexed to accommodate line overtime opportunities. This will be on a case-by-case basis and will require supervisor approval; however, if the employee in this position wishes, s/he may "opt out" of line overtime, which excuses the individual from line mandatory overtime as well. Employees will not be able to opt-in and opt-out of the overtime shift option repeatedly. Approval of doing so after the initial decision will be required through the Assistant Fire Chief of Training to the Deputy Chief of Administration.
Time will be afforded on duty to maintain minimal firefighting/EMS skills such as EMT refresher, driver license maintenance, paramedic licensure CEs, and other skills which must be maintained to provide an orderly rotation back to the line. Additionally, personnel offered this position will be afforded time daily to take part in the Department Wellness Program. If interested, they may also open taskbooks for approved CICCS positions and take part in training and deployment opportunities as approved by their supervisor.
Office space will be assigned for the position. If available, a department vehicle may be taken home within District boundaries or to support District needs. This does not constitute an "on-call" program. There is no expectation of change of lifestyle, availability, or monitoring for response. Personnel who take a vehicle home are not paid unless they respond to an incident or handle a divisional need as directed by their supervisor.
Applicants may reapply at the end of the rotation if they desire. Applicants will maintain their bid station and ability to bid open shift positions for the duration of this assignment. Personnel will move back to their bid position at the conclusion of the assignment.
The District considers multidivisional experience as a desirable qualification for promotion. This position offers a wide variety of career development opportunities, offering experiences valuable to becoming a manager in the Fire Department such as, program and project coordination, budget coordination, and many other administrative skill sets.
