Robotics Systems Engineer I, Robotics Delivery and Packaging Innovation (RDPI) - Tech Deployment

In RDPI, we have the unique role and privilege of deploying leading edge industrial robotics and customer fulfillment technologies across North America Stores operations. We raise the bar on the speed, quality and cost of deploying industrial technologies at scale across North America, functioning as the field team who plan, execute and launch the technologies that our internal design and product strategy partners in RDPI develop.

Project durations vary from a few days to several months, with travel across North America. This is a travel-based role and you will be expected to travel to meet the requirements of your projects across North America, upwards of 75% or more.

As a Systems Engineer in RDPI, you will be overseeing large scale project planning, installation, and launch of industrial automation technologies across Amazons growing Stores network. This field engineering position demands strong technical skills for deploying robotic equipment, including mechanical and electrical systems, network configurations, and software coordination. The ideal candidate has experience with complex electro-mechanical and network systems, demonstrating leadership in installation, maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting of technologies being deployed across North America. You will work with cross-functional partners across our engineering, product strategy, software, supply chain, third-party installers, contracted deployment engineers, construction teams, and internal operations customer teams, functioning as the lead on-site project manager to provide technical oversight on installation Amazon-designed automation equipment. This Systems Engineer position is an individual contributor role, influencing and leading stakeholders from planning through go-live of each project. Candidates should have a proven track record of successfully leading multiple concurrent projects across one or more automation solutions.

**Relocation to Amazon Corporate offices in Seattle, Boston, Nashville or Austin will be required for the role.

Key job responsibilities

As a Systems Engineer I, you will work with a team of 1-5 engineers and collaborate with an on-site project manager to provide technical oversight on the installation of both third party and Amazon designed robotics equipment that may be in various phases of the product life cycle. These deployments require extensive collaboration with various stakeholders, including third-party installers, contracted engineers, construction, hardware, software, IT, and other partner teams. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with both internal and external partners and customers. As an Amazonian, you must demonstrate independent initiative to identify and solve problems in real time during deployments. A strong technical understanding, love for field work, and a keen interest in diving deep into the understanding of Amazon's robotics systems are key attributes for this role.

- You will support and guide installation of robotics, packaging and sortation technologies at Amazon fulfillment centers

- You will develop detailed knowledge of the operation of robotic systems and guide installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of these systems both on site and remotely

- You will manage technical ambiguity around integration of work cells in fulfillment centers

- You will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams

- You will travel to project sites and collaborate both virtually and in person to ensure all business stakeholders are aligned on program status

- You will manage day to day project scheduling and budget management

- You will work on continuous improvement activities to improve the projects in your space

- You will generate and implement continuous improvement ideas around work-scopes

- You will lead teams of other engineers on projects

- You will travel to both live warehouses and new construction sites, the scopes may vary significantly in length and include heavy travel

- You will manage the tactical deployment of large scale industrial automation technologies, ranging in technical complexity and product maturity from early alpha/beta to mature Generally Available.

- You will own the tactical execution (onsite coordination of installation and acceptance testing) to achieve the target "go-live" date for each project assigned; delivering independently.

- You will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams to convert technical requirements into refined deployment execution documents (schedules, Standard Operating Procedures, dependencies, etc.)

- You will improve operational metrics and team processes through automation and optimization

- You will independently resolve difficult technical problems during deployment, considering operational burden and making appropriate trade-offs between time, quality, and resources

- You will create and improve standard work documents and operational guidebooks, and work towards automating or improving team processes.

- You will influence internal and partner teams towards meeting team level goals.

- You will develop subject matter expertise in one or more deployment domains

- You will mentor junior engineers and participate in technical assessment

- You will drive operational excellence initiatives with measurable results

- This is a travel-based role and you will be expected to travel to meet the requirements of your projects across North America, upwards of 75% or more.

- Lift and move totes up to 49 pounds each

- Regular bending, lifting, stretching and reaching both below the waist and above the head

- Walking in the FC and around area with great frequency; facilities are over a quarter mile in length

- Must be able to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours

- Should be able to work in environments with variable noise levels, lighting conditions and temperature variation

- Able to access all areas of building (ascending and descending ladders, stairs, gangways safely and without limitation)

A day in the life

In this role you will be focused on execution of end-to-end deployment and manage technical ambiguity around integration of workcells in fulfillment centers. On a daily basis you will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams, to ensure the product you are deploying, is both ready for deployment and capable of achieving the business requirements. You will travel to your project sites, collaborate both virtually and in person, to ensure all business stakeholders are aligned on program status. You will manage the day-to-day project execution, and work on continuous improvement activities to improve the projects in your space. You will spend time with mentors and your manager to develop your professional skills and collaborate amongst your team to move the needle on the services you are accountable for.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent

- 1+ year's experience with technical drawings and/or reading CAD models (mechanical and electrical)

- 1+ year's Experience working on mechanical, electrical, IT networked, or software systems

- Understanding of data collection, reporting processes, and ability to make data-driven decisions

- Ability to read technical drawings and/or reading CAD models to resolve on-site clash issues using 3D clash detection reports

- Ability to troubleshoot robotics systems to resolve escalations including quality hand-off, live order testing, site acceptance testing, operational readiness testing, monitoring robotics system performance, etc.

- Ability to read and develop technical documentation and process instructions

- Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

- Willingness to work primarily in a construction or warehouse environment in a field-based role and travel extensively across the US and potentially internationally

- Must be proficient in standard office software tools and processes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- 1-3 years of experience working in a field engineering, construction, manufacturing, or warehouse environment

- Proven experience working on hardware integration or complex mechanical-electrical or networked industrial equipment. Knowledge of specific robotic equipment (Fanuc, ABB), and Allen Bradley PLC experience

- Ability to demonstrate past use of data to drive decision making processes

- Practical understanding of network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, switching, HTTP)

- Ability to take independent initiative when presented with a business need

- Certified in OSHA, ANSI, or other Automation Safety Certifications. Familiarity with LEAN or Six Sigma, certifications are a plus

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
