Job Title: Registered Nurse

Must-Have: Previous travel experience preferred. 2-5 years of PACU experience is preferred but strong candidates with less experience will be considered.

Description:
Department: PACU

The PACU consists of Phase 1 and Phase 2 areas.

Phase 1 is covered by PACU staff and travelers.

Nurse to patient ratios are 1-2:1.

Common cases include general surgery, orthopedic totals and minor cases, ENT, urology, gynecology, cesarean sections, and podiatry.

The electronic medical record system used is Meditech.

RNs are self-sufficient and can manipulate their assignments independently.

No nurse aides are present on this unit.

Respiratory therapy equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP.

Occasionally, ICU patients may recover in PACU if intubated; they will be transported back to ICU after surgery for further care.

RNs are required to read cardiac strips.

Shifts are either 9 or 10 hours and rotate to cover late discharges.

Schedules are outlined four weeks in advance for six weeks with no self-scheduling.

Average weeknight call requirement is one weeknight per week.

Weekends are covered with an average of one weekend every 5-6 weekends.

Call coverage is required during holidays.

Response time for call is 30 minutes.

Floating is required; PACU RNs cover pre-op holding rooms as well.

Pre-op holding includes administering antibiotics, fluids, and assisting in pre-operative care.

Scrubs are provided.

Orientation lasts 1-2 weeks with a preceptor.
