Overview

LMI is seeking an experienced RF Firmware Engineer to support the continued development of our next-generation mesh networking hardware for Department of Defense customers. This engineer will serve as the technical lead for RF firmware development, working closely with our hardware design partners to integrate new radio technologies into our platform while maintaining performance, reliability, and security.

 

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of embedded firmware, RF communications, and hardware development. You will collaborate with internal engineering teams, external design firms, manufacturing partners, and customer stakeholders to deliver production-ready capabilities that support mission-critical deployments.

 

U.S. citizenship is required. Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Secret clearance. An active Secret or Top Secret clearance is preferred.

 

Approximately 20–30% travel to customer sites, integration events, hardware design reviews, manufacturing partners, and field testing activities as required.

 

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Lead firmware development for new RF hardware platforms supporting LMI mesh networking products.
  • Work directly with external hardware design firms to integrate the Texas Instruments CC1200 transceiver into next-generation hardware designs.
  • Develop, modify, and maintain embedded firmware to support new RF transceiver capabilities and optimize radio performance.
  • Design and implement RF communication protocols, device drivers, and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Support hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation of prototype and production hardware.
  • Troubleshoot RF performance issues using laboratory test equipment including spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and RF test equipment.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, cybersecurity, and systems engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Support firmware verification, manufacturing test development, and production readiness.
  • Participate in field testing, customer demonstrations, and deployment activities as required.
  • Produce technical documentation supporting firmware architecture, integration, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Support design reviews and provide technical guidance on RF system architecture and implementation

  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience using C/C++.
  • Experience developing firmware for RF transceivers or wireless communication systems.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with the Texas Instruments CC1200 transceiver or similar sub-GHz RF devices.
  • Experience developing mesh networking or low-power wireless communication systems.
  • Familiarity with BLE, LoRa, 802.15.4, or proprietary RF protocols.
  • Experience supporting DoD or government technology programs.
  • Understanding of secure communications, cryptographic key management, and secure firmware development.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing test and production transitions.
  • Active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.

Travel

  • Approximately 20–30% travel to customer sites, integration events, hardware design reviews, manufacturing partners, and field testing activities as required.

 

Target salary range: $100,000 - 130,000
