The OpportunityAs a
Researcher, you will be responsible for the development and execution of applied research projects in Water Resources Assessment as part of the Environmental Services Division of InnoTech Alberta. This role leverages and coordinates technical expertise to analyze and interpret water resource and stable isotope datasets, synthesize findings with complementary data sources, and translate results into practical applications that support industry-sponsored projects, inform public policy, and advance environmental management. InnoTech maintains a number of key facilities to support these activities, including a comprehensive stable isotope laboratory. The position is intended to contribute to the development of best practices to support both external clients and internal projects coordinated by the Environmental Services Division and other InnoTech divisions. Staff are expected to participate in technical coaching and mentorship of team members, supporting capacity building and knowledge transfer within the organization.
You will join a team of applied scientists and technologists that strive to be the preferred industry and government partners for solving complex environmental, natural resource and energy management challenges. As part of the Environmental Impacts Team, the focus of this role will be on water quality and quantity assessments using advanced tools such as stable isotopes and geochemical tracers, with appropriate integration of geospatial datasets, or numerical modeling. The role also includes project design and management, stakeholder and partner engagement, business development, and reporting and knowledge sharing. Strong or emerging technical leadership is considered an asset. We seek a motivated individual with a desire to enhance the team's capabilities and capacity through training, professional development, and support for specialized facilities and infrastructure including the stable isotope lab.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:
- Development, management and execution of applied research studies including:
- Preparation and timely delivery of proposals, presentations for business development and for communication of research outcomes, and technical reports.
- Interaction with clients and stakeholders to determine scopes of work, to provide progress updates, and to manage expectations.
- Project management including time and budget forecasting, workforce and asset allocation to ensure optimal scheduling and delegation of tasks.
- Coordination and completion of field and laboratory workplans.
- Preparation and presentation of reports to clients and publication of novel results, as appropriate.
- Application of technical expertise and creativity in business development efforts, including:
- Engaging with external clients, stakeholders, and collaborators to identify high-priority challenges requiring technical solutions.
- Assisting in monitoring or analyzing industry market intelligence, industry best practices, and emerging trends.
- Championing targeted business opportunities.
- Preparing program and project proposals and budgets to secure external client contracts and leverage internal funding support.
- Representing InnoTech Alberta at tradeshows, conferences, and workshops.
Qualifications and SkillsRequired- MSc or PhD in Earth Sciences or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Current membership or eligibility for membership with APEGA (P. Geo. or P. Eng). Candidates with other professional designations may be considered if appropriate.
- 4 - 6 years of experience working in the field of water resources (e.g., environmental science, hydrology, hydrogeology, geochemistry).
- Experience in application of stable isotopes (e.g., d18O, d2H, d13C, d34S, d15N) in environmental or water resource assessments.
- Experience designing and/or implementing field sampling programs for water, soil, or related environmental media, including quality assurance/quality control protocols.
- Familiarity with isotope-based mixing models, groundwater flow, or solute transport models and/or geospatial data analysis is an asset.
- Familiarity with programs such as PHREEQC, NETPATH, Geochemistry Workbench, AQUACHEM, MODFLOW or similar software is an asset.
- Knowledge of environmental impacts, challenges, and technical solutions enabling sustainable development in Alberta is an asset.
- Problem-solving skills and potential to integrate technical solutions from multiple industries and sectors to address client needs.
- Strong decision-making and organizational skills with ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks, and competing agendas.
- Flexibility to work and conduct research independently and as part of multi-disciplinary collaborative teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated by past experience delivering technical reports, proposals or presentations.
