Overview

Please note that this position is contingent upon the successful award of a contract currently under bid. 

 

Summary:

The Research Physiologist II serves as a senior scientific contributor supporting the design, execution, and analysis of advanced environmental physiology research programs. This position provides expertise in heat, cold, and high-altitude physiology, wearable sensor technologies, human performance assessment, and advanced statistical analytics.

 

The successful candidate will lead data-intensive research efforts, develop physiological prediction models, manage large-scale datasets, support military field studies, and contribute to scientific publications that enhance Warfighter health, readiness, and performance.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

 

Research Design and Scientific Leadership

  • Assist with the design, development, and execution of research protocols evaluating physiological responses to environmental extremes.
  • Support study methodology development and experimental design.
  • Provide scientific interpretation of physiological outcomes and performance measures.
  • Conduct literature reviews and support development of evidence-based research approaches.

Wearable Sensor and Data Management

  • Lead collection and management of data obtained from wearable physiological sensors.
  • Configure, calibrate, validate, and troubleshoot wearable monitoring systems.
  • Manage large-scale physiological datasets and data streams.
  • Support data governance, quality assurance, and information management requirements.

Advanced Statistical Analysis

  • Perform data cleaning, processing, curation, and quality control.
  • Develop and maintain analytical workflows using:
    • R
    • MATLAB
    • SPSS
    • SAS
    • Excel
  • Conduct advanced statistical analyses and predictive modeling.
  • Develop algorithms and analytical tools to assess physiological risk and performance outcomes.
  • Interpret results and prepare technical findings for investigators and stakeholders.

Human Performance and Environmental Physiology

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in:
    • Heat physiology
    • Cold physiology
    • High-altitude physiology
    • Human performance optimization
    • Exercise metabolism
  • Conduct and oversee:
    • VO9max testing
    • Submaximal endurance testing
    • Pulmonary function testing
    • Metabolic assessments

Clinical and Laboratory Support

  • Operate blood gas analyzers including NOVA, Radiometer, and iSTAT systems.
  • Support physiological and biological sample collection activities.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and quality standards.

Field Research Leadership

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams conducting field studies at military installations and remote research locations.
  • Coordinate deployment of personnel, equipment, wearable sensors, and research systems.
  • Oversee field data collection, troubleshooting, and operational execution.

Scientific Publications and Reporting

  • Prepare technical reports, written analyses, and scientific summaries.
  • Develop publication-quality tables, figures, and graphics.
  • Draft manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present findings at scientific conferences and military stakeholder meetings.
Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
  • Strong scientific writing and presentation skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Environmental Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Human Performance, Physiology, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental physiology research.
  • Advanced proficiency with R, MATLAB, SPSS, SAS, or equivalent statistical software.
  • Experience conducting advanced physiological data analysis and interpretation.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a favorable Tier 3 Background Investigation and suitability determination.
  • Must be eligible for Common Access Card (CAC) issuance and access to government facilities and systems.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Position is primarily onsite at USARIEM in Natick, Massachusetts.
    • Travel throughout the Continental United States (CONUS) may be required.
    • Lead and support military field studies, environmental physiology research activities, and scientific conferences.
    • Ability to travel to military installations, remote research sites, and high-altitude environments.
    • Occasional evening, weekend, and extended work hours may be required to support field research operations and data collection activities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense, military, or federal biomedical research programs.
  • Expertise with wearable sensor technologies and physiological monitoring systems.
  • Experience developing predictive models and advanced analytics.
  • Experience operating blood gas analyzers.
  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience managing large-scale physiological datasets.
  • Experience leading field studies at military installations.

 

Pay and Benefits

 

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 to $145,000.00.
