Research Director and Cancer Screening Improvement CoordinatorBethel, AlaskaPosition Summary:Under the guidance and supervision of the VP of Quality, the Director of Research & Cancer Screening Improvement Coordinator provides strategic collaboration and operational oversight for research activities and population-based cancer screening initiatives serving YK Delta patients and staff (~30,000 people) operating within a Tribal Health Organization. This hybrid role integrates research governance with the coordination and expansion of culturally responsive screening programs for routine recommended screenings (i.e., cervical, breast, and colorectal cancers). This role will conduct projects and programs in alignment with all applicable ethical, regulatory, clinical best practice, and legal standards.
This role collaborates with divisions and assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive cancer screening programs for cervical, breast, and colorectal cancers, with the goal of improving early detection, reducing health disparities, and enhancing patient outcomes.
The Director ensures full compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements, tribal research review processes, and data governance policies. The position ensures that all research and screening activities align with tribal sovereignty, organizational priorities, and community priorities while advancing early detection, reducing/eliminating health disparities.
Working in close partnership with Tribal leadership, Elders, clinical teams, and community stakeholders, the Director advances culturally grounded, community-driven approaches that integrate indigenous knowledge and values into research and care delivery.
Position Qualifications:Minimum Education: Master's or doctoral degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Nursing, Epidemiology, or related field.
Minimum Experience: 5-7+ years of experience in public health, clinical program management, or research administration; Experience with cancer screening programs
License, Certification, Registration: CITI/GCP Certified; Lean for Leaders, Calricaraq (within the first year of hire)
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a Tribal Health Organization or Indian Health Service setting. Familiarity with culturally responsive care models and community-based-participatory research (CBPR), Tribal Based Participatory Research (TBPR). Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Certification in nationally recognized Research Association (Certified Clinical Research Professional CCRP) from the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA); Lean management certifications
Equipment/Tools: Data analytics software and appropriate workstation; Office equipment (i.e., telephone, computer, fax machine, copy machine, etc.) and medical equipment as appropriate for the position. Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. Must be proficient in Cerner Electronic Medical Records system.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Familiar with YKHC cancer screening processes and Research Study requirements;
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to adhere to and implement rigid protocol guidelines and work within strict schedules and deadlines.
Proficient in performing Raven (Cerner) clinical data queries.
Familiarity with current research methods including CDC, FDA and IHS research regulations.
Knowledge of epidemiology and statistical compilation and interpretation.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Must have the ability to communicate, retrieve and present data and information both verbally and written.
Knowledge, skill and ability to work in a cross-cultural setting
Person must demonstrate ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions; deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs); and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Must be able to take complex information and statistical data and put it into comprehensive and understandable lay terms to disseminate to the general public.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the YKHC Research Coordinator; Cancer screening & outreach team; Person must demonstrate ability to hire and supervise staff, develop work schedules, develop SOP, manage contracts, and manage grant funding and purchases.
