Full Job Description
An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Business Manager within the Beckman Research Institute. In this role, you will oversee the daily operations of Research Business Administration through the leadership of analytical and administrative staff. You will independently manage a mid-sized research portfolio, implement operational procedures, and apply sound judgment to effectively support and guide faculty and staff. The successful candidate will possess extensive expertise in research administration, as well as a deep understanding of City of Hope policies, procedures, and systems. Strong management and leadership skills are essential to drive operational excellence and foster a collaborative, high-performing environment.

As a successful candidate, you will:
• Manage complex research administration functions, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cost transfers, and oversight of extramural funding portfolios.
• Partner with Principal Investigators to support grant proposal development and submission, manage compliance requirements, and address matters related to patents, intellectual property, and clinical trials.
• Review and approve purchasing, travel, reimbursement, and expense activities while ensuring compliance with institutional and sponsor guidelines.
• Collaborate closely with the Office of Sponsored Research and other key stakeholders to support research operations and provide expert guidance on research administration policies and procedures.
• Lead faculty and staff recruitment, onboarding, personnel actions, visa-related processes, and timekeeping administration to support departmental workforce needs.
• Oversee departmental business operations, including purchasing, facilities management, laboratory support services, safety training, and equipment maintenance coordination.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop Research Operations Analysts and administrative staff through workload management, coaching, performance feedback, and annual evaluations.
• Provide administrative and human resources oversight for departmental personnel while fostering a productive and collaborative work environment.
• Support strategic planning initiatives in partnership with department leadership and contribute financial and operational analyses to drive informed decision-making.
• Represent Research Business Operations on institutional committees and special projects, helping advance organizational goals and research initiatives.

Your qualifications should include:
• Bachelors degree with 3 years of administration experience in an academic research or healthcare environment including 2 years of progressively responsible management experience.
• Background in business, finance, business administration, research administration, science, or related field is preferred
• 5+ years of business management experience in an academic research or healthcare environment is preferred.
