Full Job Description
Virtual Desktop System Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Endpoint Engineering organization within the Desktop, Device & Engineering (DDE) Virtual Desktop Services workstream on Kentro's VA ESOM contract. This technical role is responsible for the engineering, administration, and optimization, of the VA's enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure supporting a geographically distributed workforce.

The ideal candidate brings advanced experience supporting Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, providing technical subject matter expertise across the virtualization environment while ensuring the platform remains secure, resilient, highly available, and optimized for performance. This individual delivers advanced technical support, integration, and optimization of the virtual desktop environment, maintaining the underlying infrastructure, engineering reliable deployment and configuration processes, and ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performing operations.

Location: Remote -This position can be performed remotely within the United States and will support Eastern Time working hours.

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position is $130-$147K annually. Kentro determines compensation by evaluating current government contracting and commercial market conditions, as well as the role's specific requirements. Final salary placement within this range will be based on the candidate's relevant skills, experience, education, certifications, location, and security clearance level, where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, administer, and maintain Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments
  • Partner with infrastructure, networking, security, and application engineering teams to ensure the successful delivery of enterprise virtualization initiatives.
  • Lead the design and implementation of enterprise virtual desktop solutions and contribute to the continuous improvement of the virtual desktop environment.
  • Lead application packaging, testing, and deployment activities to ensure compatibility across virtual desktop environments.
  • Partner with Endpoint Engineering teams to align application requirements with device baselines, configuration standards, endpoint security requirements, and lifecycle management processes.
  • Actively participate as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in technical working groups and engineering activities related to Azure Virtual Desktop and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.
  • Publish and maintain VA-required applications within the Azure Virtual Desktop and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments.
  • Analyze and resolve performance issues identified through infrastructure monitoring and diagnostic tools, including Wireshark, ControlUp, Microsoft Performance Monitor, and related technologies.
  • Serve as an escalation resource for complex virtual desktop, deployment, and integration-related issues requiring advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and platform-level diagnostics leveraging logs, telemetry, endpoint analytics, and engineering troubleshooting tools.
  • Collaborate with Virtual Desktop teams to validate application compatibility, deployment sequencing, endpoint performance requirements, and operational readiness activities.
  • Support ongoing endpoint modernization initiatives and operational engineering activities across Virtual Desktop Environments.
  • Participate in operational touchpoints, deployment coordination efforts, engineering working sessions, and technical collaboration forums as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Ten (10) years of relevant systems administration or enterprise infrastructure experience.
  • Experience administering Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop/XenApp), or comparable enterprise virtualization platforms.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server and enterprise virtual desktop environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within cross-functional technical teams in a fast-paced enterprise environment.
  • Strong experience supporting enterprise application packaging, deployment, testing, and integration activities within large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Experience supporting modern endpoint management and deployment technologies, including Windows Autopilot, co-management, and cloud-based endpoint management solutions.
  • Working knowledge of endpoint lifecycle management, device configuration standards, deployment methodologies, and enterprise operational engineering practices.
  • Experience using ServiceNow for IT service management.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting large-scale federal government or enterprise IT environments.
  • Familiarity with endpoint security, compliance frameworks, and enterprise device management best practices.
  • Experience supporting enterprise deployment automation, endpoint analytics, or operational reporting initiatives.
  • Industry certifications such as Microsoft, JAMF, CompTIA Security+, or related endpoint engineering certifications are preferred.
