At RWJBarnabas Health, our Infusion Center Registered Nurses provide specialized, compassionate care to patients and families navigating cancer and hematologic conditions. As a Registered Nurse at the Melchiorre Cancer Center Infusion Center, you'll combine oncology nursing expertise with thoughtful patient education, symptom management, and individualized care throughout treatment. From administering chemotherapy and managing vascular access devices to recognizing oncology emergencies and supporting patients through the physical and emotional impact of treatment, you'll play an important role in creating a safe, coordinated, and supportive care experience.
As an Infusion Center Registered Nurse (RN), a typical day may include:
  • Performing comprehensive assessments and reassessments while developing, implementing, and evaluating individualized plans of care for hematology and oncology patients
  • Administering chemotherapy and biotherapy in accordance with established policies, procedures, and oncology nursing standards
  • Initiating, maintaining, and monitoring IV chemotherapy and implanted access devices while observing for treatment-related side effects and potential biohazardous exposure
  • Providing central line care, including flushing, blood draws, dressing changes, and ongoing maintenance
  • Recognizing hematologic and oncologic emergencies and responding appropriately to changes in patient condition
  • Identifying and managing medication extravasation according to established clinical protocols
  • Administering blood and blood products while following applicable safety policies and procedures
  • Caring for patients with complex hematology and oncology needs, including chemotherapy treatment, sickle cell crisis, fever, neutropenia, and acute or chronic pain
  • Providing oncology and chemotherapy-related education to patients and families while reinforcing treatment plans, symptom management, and ongoing care needs
  • Supporting patients and families as they cope with the emotional impact of diagnosis and treatment and connecting them with Social Services and other resources when appropriate
  • Collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary partners to coordinate care, establish patient goals, support discharge planning, and communicate changes in patient condition
  • Assuming Charge Nurse responsibilities when delegated, including assessing staffing needs and organizing assignments based on patient acuity and staff competency

To be considered for this Infusion Center Registered Nurse opportunity, you must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold a current New Jersey Registered Nurse (RN) license. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or current matriculation toward a baccalaureate nursing degree, is preferred. BLS certification is required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire to the unit. Candidates must also hold IV certification from an approved facility or complete IV certification requirements within 90 days of hire. Registered Nurses administering chemotherapy must obtain and maintain Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification through the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Nurses providing oncology care who do not hold Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) national certification must complete a minimum of 12 oncology-specific continuing education credits annually in accordance with Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation guidelines. Candidates must successfully complete all required orientation programs. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong oncology assessment, chemotherapy administration, vascular access, central line care, symptom management, patient education, critical thinking, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills. This is an hourly, day shift opportunity working 9.5-hour shifts in The Infusion Center at Melchiorre Cancer Center.
