Description:

Position Purpose

At Saint Francis Hospital, the Cardiac Surgery Step Down provides intermediate-level care to patients recovering from cardiac surgery, including CABG, valve repair/replacement, and other cardiovascular procedures. The RN will deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal outcomes.

What You Will Do

  • Provide direct nursing care to post-operative cardiac surgery patients in a step-down setting

  • Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, vital signs, and hemodynamic status

  • Manage chest tubes, temporary pacing wires, surgical incisions, and IV medications

  • Administer medications, including cardiac drips, per physician orders and protocols

  • Educate patients and families on recovery, medications, and lifestyle modifications

  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams

  • Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)

  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited college or university affiliated nursing program.

  • Licensure: Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Connecticut.

  • Certification: BLS (AHA/ARC) required.

  • Minimum 1 year of acute care nursing experience (cardiac or critical care preferred)

Preferred Skills

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree preferred.

  • Experience: cardiac step-down, ICU, or telemetry unit

  • Certification: ACLS and Stroke Certification preferred.

Position Highlights

  • Rotating Every other Weekend/Holiday
